Norah Catherine (Kit) Huycke
Kit died peacefully at the Campbell House Hospice in Collingwood after a short illness on June 25, 2024. She was born in Toronto to Olyve (Hogan) and John LeBel on March 6, 1933. She was the loving wife of the late Frederick Huycke for 69 years and a warm, caring and loving Mom to Catherine (John Wettlaufer), Mary (deceased), Margot (Tara Goldstein), Graeme (Julia) and Jennifer (Stephen Christie), and a wonderful grandmother to Ryley (Lisa) and Jeffrey (Kathryn Buczko) Dutton, Maggie (Luke Baxter), Tessa and William Christie, and Peter, Peggy and Oliver Huycke. Further fun came from being a great-grandmother to Noah, Charlotte, Walker and (her namesake) Kit Dutton. She also leaves her sisters Nancy Gehman (Gerald) and Mary Malone and was predeceased by her brother John LeBel.
Kit grew up in Toronto, with a few years spent in Sarnia, and graduated from St. Joseph’s College School in 1950. She then was hired to work at Osgoode Hall in downtown Toronto. It was here that she met the love of her life, Fred. They were married in June 1952 and had a wonderful life together with their family until his death in 2021.
Kit was a “sweetheart” who loved her family and her friends. Most were long standing and all were loyal to her. She volunteered for decades in Toronto for those in need (primarily at Bond St. Nursery School and for The Junior League) and was always there when her own children needed her love and guidance. She skied, played tennis and golf (where she scored a hole in one – with a range ball no less) until late in life and kept our cottage on Stoney Lake and ski cabin at Osler Bluff running smoothly for many years. She made fantastic dinners a routine and always welcomed our friends into her home. She and our Dad had a wonderful time together as they supported each other in raising our family and making a good life for all of us.
For the last several years Mom lived with dementia. She showed us that a life with dementia can be meaningful, and she lived this life with grace and never ending love. Initially our 90+ year old Dad was her main caregiver. Just before Dad died Mom moved to the assisted living floor of their retirement home (Raglan Village) where she was exceedingly well cared for by staff there and by her wonderful personal support workers who were fundamental to her being so happy in her last years. We want to pay particular respect to the unbounded love she received from her caregiver & companion, Maureen Powell, who made the last 3 years of her life so much better than they might otherwise have been. We are forever grateful.
Our Mom was a great and special person who was loved by so many and for such good reason. She had a twinkle in her eye and a kind word for all. We miss her already as there is a deep void in our lives now. But we believe she is in a better place and has found our Dad & Mary – with her in heaven.
Contributions may be made in Kit’s memory to the Alzheimer Society of Canada alzheimer.ca. A Celebration of Life will be held in the autumn. Details will be announced closer to the date.
