Mary Elizabeth Phillips (nee Morgan) –
Mary died peacefully on Friday March 15, 2024 in Shelburne Long Term Care at the age of 89. Mary was formerly of Toronto and Brock’s Beach in Wasaga Beach.
She was the beloved wife of the late John David Phillips (2017). Loving mother of David (Cassandra) and Jeffrey. Cherished grandmother of Stephan, Marc, Cierra, Charlotte, Naomi, Audrey and Violet, and the great grandmother of Noelle, as well as being a friend and mother figure to Larry Middleton.
Mary will also be missed by her eleven nieces and nephews, and dear friends at Shelburne Long Term Care and Bay Haven. Predeceased by all of her brothers and sisters-in-law, Gord (Jean), Andy (Audrey), Bill (Grace), Dorothy (Fred), Russell (Sally) marks the sorrow end to a generation.
Mary was born in Allendale, Ontario and adopted at a very young age as the only child of Pearl and Basil Morgan. The English Tudor house located at 38 Mason Boulevard, at the top of Hogg’s Hollow, was the family home in which she was raised while attending the two room York Mills Public School and later Havergal Women’s College on Avenue Road before The University of Toronto. In 1979 they said good-bye to the family home and moved into the Spanish Villas on Esterbrooke Avenue.
Visiting a girlfriend at her family cottage on Brock’s Beach is where Mary met her husband to be while at his family cottage. Married on August 27, 1955 they spent their honeymoon at Brock’s Beach. The following year, 1956, John and Mary purchased a cottage of their own on Brock’s Beach and right next to the Phillips’ family cottage. For over 60 years it was the ‘constant’ in their lives together and they used it as a gathering place for family and friends. It is where they celebrated wedding anniversaries together, including their 60th.
Before meeting John, Mary worked as a teller for the Dominion Bank of Canada after obtaining written permission to do so. She took time away from the workforce to get David and Jeffrey off to a good start and into school before returning to The Toronto Dominion Bank. She reached mandatory retirement while working at the TD Tower in the Credit Compliance Dept. Then she worked a few more years for TD.
Friends will be received at the Carruthers & Davidson Funeral Home, 509 River Road West, Wasaga Beach on Wednesday March 27, 2024 from 11a.m. to 1p.m. for visitation. The Funeral Service will follow at 1p.m. with a reception to follow in the lower lounge. If desired, a donation to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by Mary’s family.
