Hamilton, George Sicotte
We are sad to announce the passing of G. Sicotte Hamilton in Collingwood on September 17, 2024 in his 91st year. He died at home in the company of Marilyn, his wife of 65 years, after a very brief illness.
He is survived by Marilyn Lyon Hamilton, his sisters Diana Eddy and Audrey Pady, his daughter Leslie Hayes, grandchildren Gregory Hayes, Kate Hayes, Geoffrey Hayes and Grace Hamilton. He is predeceased by his son, Gordon Hamilton.
Sicotte had a good life. He grew up in Montreal, attending Lower Canada College and then studying Civil Engineering at McGill University. He spent many happy hours racing sailboats and making lifelong friends at the Royal St Lawrence Yacht club.
He met Marilyn Lyon in Montreal in 1958 on a blind date. They were married the next year. His daughter Leslie was born in 1960 followed by his son Gordon in 1964.
Sicotte’s love of sailing took him to the world championships in the Netherlands in 1959 where his team won gold for Canada. In the 1970’s he became President of the Ontario Sailing Association and the Canadian Yachting Association. He led efforts to establish a youth sailing program at the Couchiching Yacht Club and was on the coaching crew at the PanAm games. He volunteered at various regattas, making a special point to return to the Canadian Olympic Regatta at Kingston for many years.
In 1980 he realized a long-held dream of owning a big sailboat, the Mount Royal II, which was moored in Georgian Bay. Thus began many happy trips traveling up and down the bay with friends and family.
In later years he was a founding member and enthusiastic participant in the Morningside Coffee Crew, which gave him great pleasure.
The family will make arrangements for a private service at a later date.
