This is the end, beautiful friend. Picture what it will be so limitless and free.
Dave, aka “Brutus”, sports fanatic, lover of every genre of music, and a hippie at heart, entered the Stairway to Heaven while holding the love of his life Beverly’s hand on November 3, 2023.
Dave’s life began in Collingwood on October 13, 1952 as the youngest son of Clarence and Dorothy (nee Elyea). He grew up playing numerous sports such as hockey, baseball, football, broomball, curling, and darts.
Dave met Beverly as young teenagers and married in 1972. Soon after they welcomed their 2 children Darrin (Angela) and Angela Draper (Scott). Dave joined the Canadian Armed Forces which took their young family on adventures across Canada and to Germany. During this time Dave served a tour of duty with the UN as a Peacekeeper in the Middle East.
Last year Dave’s family celebrated his 35 year membership with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 63.
Dave left the army with an honourable discharge so they could raise their children in their hometown of Collingwood to be surrounded by family and friends only to return to the Canadian Military to work as a Civilian at the Department of National Defence until he retired.
Dave has left behind his siblings Fred (Shirley), Helen Smith (Larry), John (Marie), Paul (Kathy), and Brad (Margaret predeceased). Dave was predeceased by his oldest sister Lorayn.
David loved and lived for his grandchildren. They were his pride and joy. He was a big kid at heart that always wanted to have fun so naturally all the kids loved their poppa/grandpa. Dave had a special and unique relationship with Maclean (Veronica), Gabby (Chris), Cameron, and Evan. There were many sleepovers, paintball adventures, swimming at Sunset Point, fishing, biking, and sharing his love of sports and music.
Dave was also a proud great poppa of Sophia, Logan, Demarcus, and Noah.
Dave will be remembered by his in laws Sue and Hans Muller, Tom Brown, Wes Dawson (Marg predeceased) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
We will all keep our Dave, dad, poppa, grandpa close in our hearts and celebrate as he lived by doing our best to have a good time, a big laugh, a lot of fun, enjoying music, keeping active, and getting outdoors.
We will think of him living up high on Sugar Mountain, enjoying the view, listening to a good tune, and of course cheering for the Dallas Cowboys!!!
The family would like to thank the CGMH ER and ICU staff, Dr. Baird, Dr. Bonta, Dr Elkhuizen and a special thank you to Christine and Dr. Bouchard, Dr. Celeste Bouchard, and to Hospice Georgian Triangle Nurses, PSW’s, and Volunteers.
As per Dave’s wishes there will be no funeral. The family request donations to the CGMH MRI fund or to Hospice Georgian Triangle.
