At 83 years, with his beloved family by his side, Jack McMillan passed away peacefully on Friday, October 25, 2024, at Northumberland Hills Hospital. Cherished husband of Audrey (née Giddings) for 60 wonderful years, and adored father to the “McMillan Girls”—Andrea Birney (Mike), Lisa Ainsworth (Rick), and Marianne Waldie (Jeff). Jack was the world’s most loving Papa to Kyle and Lisandra Waldie, and Nicholas (Abbey) and Trent Ainsworth, and a devoted Great-Papa to Lottie Ainsworth. Jack is fondly remembered by his sister Carole Eggleton. He was predeceased by his parents, Flex and Doris McMillan, as well as by his in-laws, Perry and Olive Giddings, and his brother-in-law, Allen Giddings. Jack was dearly loved by his sister-in-law, Susan Giddings, his Eggleton and Giddings nieces and nephews, his many cousins.
Having lived his entire life on County Road 24 in Roseneath, Jack was a steadfast presence in our lives, a true pillar of strength and wisdom. With a deep knowledge of local history, he delighted in reminiscing about days gone by, weaving tales that often took unexpected and humorous turns—a natural gift from being the grandson of a funeral director. His understated wit and gentle humor left those around him with lasting smiles.
Jack’s boundless kindness, patience, and quiet wisdom were gifts he generously shared with his grandchildren, imparting “the old ways” of doing and thinking. A devoted family man and a silent caregiver, he ensured his loved ones never wanted for anything. Jack dedicated his career to Bell as a Lineman, leaving the house whistling each morning and returning home with the same cheerful spirit.
Serving his community was important to him and he did so for 40 years as a volunteer firefighter as well as through volunteering for the Roseneath Agricultural Society.
Being a 32˚Master Mason with the Masonic Lodge was a proud accomplishment for both Jack and his family.
Together with Audrey, Jack created a warm and welcoming home, a place where all who visited felt truly embraced. His presence among us was irreplaceable, and there would never have been enough time to convey the depth of our love and gratitude. He will remain in our hearts, forever cherished and never forgotten. We find solace in knowing that he is at peace, hitching his heavenly team of horses for one last, joyful journey.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Paul Caldwell for his many years of dedicated care and support.
A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home- Reception Centre on Saturday, November 9, 2024, from 1-4 p.m. with words of remembrance to be shared at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Roseneath United Church or Northumberland County Riders Horse Club. Donations to the horse riders can be sent to by e-transfer to northumberlandcountyriders@gmail.com
