Linda Chapman Talbot
Linda Chapman Talbot, beloved wife of John Talbot of Bayfield, devoted mother, cherished sister, aunt, and daughter, passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 13, 2024. The last few years of Linda’s life were marred by the horrible disease, Frontotemporal Dementia, or FTD, which impacted her and her family as it slowly took her spirit away; however, this disease did not define her or her life. She leaves a legacy of love, kindness, and compassion for others.
Born in London, Ontario on October 25, 1949, Linda’s life was a testament to her fun-loving spirit, her deep love for her large family, her care for nature and the animals that came into her life, including her beloved golden retrievers. Linda had an unwavering commitment to helping others in their times of need and has left a profound impact on others.
Linda spent her childhood between her home in London, and summers spent at the family cottage in Bayfield or at their fishing cabin in Key River. Linda was one of six siblings and is survived by her brothers Eric (Daphne), John (Karla), and Dave (Bonnie), and sister, Susan. She is predeceased by her eldest sister, Laurie, and parents Ron (JR) and Olwen Chapman. She loved her nieces and nephews on the Chapman side: Tori, Matthew, Laura, Chris, Cala, Lee and Drew. As one of six children, there are countless stories to share of the fun, mischievous antics, love, and adventure within the Chapman home.
Linda met her husband, John Talbot, and was married in the summer of 1982. Along with John came his two children from a previous marriage, Jennifer Talbot Nixon (Dave) and Jamie Talbot (Tanice). Linda always wanted children, so it was a blessing for all of them when Jennifer and Jamie came into her life. She leaves behind her cherished grandkids, Kairo, Lochy, Logan and Mila. Linda will be remembered with love by her sister-in-law, Mattie Talbot (David, deceased) and her nieces and nephew, Lisa, Michael and Kim.
Linda embraced the free living lifestyle and loved traveling. In her youth, she went on an adventure across the country with her cousin, Kathy Lloyd. A highlight of her life was when she and John took a year to travel the world. She had so many beautiful memories from that trip that would stay with her forever. Up until the last few years when she was too ill to travel, Linda and John spent their winters between Florida and Victoria, BC where they would visit their children and grandchildren on the westcoast. The rest of the time was enjoyed at their home in Bayfield.
Prior to the onset of serious dementia, Linda contributed to her community. She volunteered to support Pioneer Park in Bayfield, the Rummage Sale, and other events. With other women and her good friend, Anny Johnston, Linda started a women’s investment club in Bayfield. Anny was a dear friend to Linda until the end, and they spent many hours walking, laughing and visiting, even when the dementia was advanced.
Linda loved to garden, and her home reflected that as she created a sanctuary for her and her family. Along with her brother, John Chapman, Linda started the Bayfield Garden Centre and ran it for many years. Linda loved finding treasures and antiques at flea markets, thrift shops and even on the side of the road. She could take the ugliest piece of furniture and turn it into a piece of art. She had a knack to make everything around her beautiful. This ability was a gift she brought to the world.
Linda led an active life, and loved swimming, biking and walking. Even in her later years, she would go for walks with John and loved their time together camping or walking in nature.
Linda spent the last six years of her life at Huronview in Clinton. The family wants to thank the incredible caring staff there for the excellent care they provided.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to share stories and honour her life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Linda’s name to Huronview, the Pioneer Park Association or the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, reflecting her lifelong commitment to helping others.
Linda’s light will forever shine bright in our hearts. May she rest in peace.
