Following a productive life of 30, 876 days, Robert Barry McCarthy, aged 84, passed away on December 1, 2023. He will be dearly missed by Jane, his wife of 62 years; his daughter Leslie (Andrew); and grandson Riley.
Born and raised in Toronto, Bob was a lifelong sports fan. He didn’t plan to leave this earth until the Leafs, Blue Jays, Argos and Raptors each won their respective championships. Sadly, this may never happen.
Bob was proud of his service with the Royal Regiment of Canada, service that saw him rise in rank to major, qualified lieutenant colonel. The regiment was a key part of his early years, professionally and socially. It was after the Sorrel Day Parade that he went for a drink at the Officers Mess and met a young lady from Sudbury who would soon become his wife.
In 1969, Bob and Jane and their young family moved to Sarnia where Bob became a secondary school teacher. He taught at Central Collegiate until its closure in 1982 and then at Alexander Mackenzie until it was time to retire in 1989.
In retirement, Bob pursued many interests – wood carving, photography, and genealogy among them. He found his true passion in writing and sharing stories, particularly those that focused on the rich history of Lambton County. A born entertainer, nothing made him happier than sharing his stories with everyone he met. His legacy will live on in the stories he left behind.
Bob spent the last 87 days of his life at St. Joseph Hospice in Sarnia. He considered this time to be a gift and certainly made the most of it. With his dry sense of humor and plethora of stories to share, Bob did his best to keep the staff both on their toes and in stitches. He entertained many visitors, brainstormed new ideas, made elaborate plans and enjoyed daily strawberry milkshakes from McDonalds. We are grateful to the wonderful staff at St. Joseph’s Hospice for their care and compassion throughout this time.
In honoring Bob’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held in the spring. As an expression of sympathy we ask that you consider a donation to St. Joseph’s Hospice in Bob’s name.
