Leonard Glen Wilcox passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, December 5th, 2023 at 81 years of age at Riverview Gardens. Len was the loving husband of Elaine (nee Hall) for over 57 years and together they created a beautiful life. Mike and Pam Wilcox, Patti and Terry Hoddinott and David and Eveleen Wilcox will miss their dear father and cherish the many memories they have. Len will also be missed by his grandchildren Jacob (Felicia), Julie (Brett), Richard (Alicia), Riley, and Kat (Addison), and great grandchildren Daxton and Hadley. He is survived by his sisters Bonita (the late Len) and Sue (Paul), and is predeceased by brothers and sisters; Bob (Muriel), Jean (Bill), Joan, Bill, Charlie, and George.
Len was born in 1942 in his childhood home on Pine Street in Chatham to the late Mary and Louis Wilcox. He joined the army and served overseas in Germany in the early 1960s. He found his Elaine on a beach trip in Grand Bend and they settled in Chatham to begin their married life and raise a family. Len was a proud firefighter and fire prevention officer. He was always busy with coaching or refereeing hockey, golfing, or spending time with his fellow members of the Royal Canadian Legion or the Imperial Club. Len was known as a gentleman who was quiet, never complained. He loved books and was a fun loving man who could play a bag pipe or any tune by ear on the piano and loved traveling and having adventures with Elaine. He was a hero who you could rely on for wisdom, kindness and acceptance.
If you knew Len, you would often hear him say, “busy hands are happy hands”, “don’t take any wooden nickles”, “oh well”, “different strokes for different folks” and “take what you want but eat what you take”. We will not say good bye to Len but instead share his special “toodle-ee-oo”. Len was very much loved and he will be very much missed.
