Mary McIllwraith Obituary
Mary Frances (Doyle) McIllwraith
It is with both deep sadness and thankful remembrance that the family of Mary Frances (Doyle) McIllwraith announce her passing at The Carleton Place Hospital in Carleton Place, ON, on August 21, 2024. Mary was born at Campbellton, NB, on August 7, 1946, and was the daughter of Henry Cecil Doyle and Alice Marie Dever.
In addition to her parents, Mary was pre-deceased by her brother, Harry, and, in 2019, by her dear daughter Eileen Alice McLean of Stittsville, ON. She is survived by Tom McIllwraith, her husband of 55 years; her son Angus (Angela MacKay) of Halifax; her son-in-law Brian McLean of Stittsville; her dear sisters Anne and Joan of Fredericton, and Elizabeth of Levis, QC. She also leaves behind her much-loved grandchildren Clyde, Grace, Lily, and Thomas McLean of Stittsville; and Kieran McIllwraith of Halifax, NS. She leaves, too, many nieces and nephews whose lives she followed closely over the years.
Mary grew up in Fredericton, NB, and attended Fredericton schools. She graduated from the University of New Brunswick (BA, 1968; BEd, 1972), the University of Maine (MEd, 1982), and Atlantic School of Theology, Halifax, NS, (Grad. Cert. in Theological Studies, 2006). Following her graduation from UNB, Mary taught mathematics in New Brunswick high schools at Keswick Ridge, Stanley, and Saint John and was a lecturer in mathematics at Bethlehem Teachers College, Malvern, Jamaica, WI (a CUSO appointment). After re-training as a guidance counsellor, Mary worked as a career counsellor at the New Brunswick Community College, Saint John, and at KPMG Management Consulting in Halifax, NS. In 2002 Mary achieved her long-held ambition and became a chaplain at the Victoria General Hospital and then at St. Vincent’s Nursing Home in Halifax. She retired in 2009 and moved to Carleton Place, ON, to be near her, at that time only 3, grandchildren.
Many thanks to Dr. Marcia Spooner and to the staff of the Carleton Place Hospital for all their support and care over the past few years and particularly over the past several weeks.
Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church, 28 Hawthorne Ave, Carleton Place, Ontario on Thursday, August 29th at 11:00 am., with Visitation from 10-11 am at the Church. Inurnment to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Carleton Place.
Friends are invited to attend a Reception following Mass in the Church Hall.
