Helena Tooze (née Watts, Thorne)
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Helena Tooze after a short illness. Helena passed away peacefully in Ottawa, on May 9th, 2024, with her children and grandchildren by her bedside.
Born in 1928, in Kingston, Ontario, growing up during the depression was difficult, but Helena was resilient and went on to Nursing School at Peterborough Civic Hospital. She graduated as a Registered Nurse 75 years ago, as class valedictorian. In 2017, she would receive the Governor General’s Medal for Volunteering, mostly in recognition of 45 years of service at Cambridge Memorial Hospital.
Her best nursing friend introduced her to her future husband, Alexander Thorne. They were married for 43 wonderful years and had four children Lawrence, Robert, David, and Heather. Following Alexander’s death in 1993, Helena rebuilt her life with travelling, square dancing, and golfing. She found love again and was married to Cyril Tooze from 1998-2001. She set an admirable example of a life well lived.
Helena moved from Cambridge to Ottawa in December 2023 to be closer to her daughter. Predeceased by her son Robert, she leaves behind Lawrence (Lee), David (Jenn) and Heather (David) and six grand children: Tyler, Davis, Aleshia, Lauren (Connor), Cassie and Mason.
Resting at Corbett Funeral Home, 95 Dundas Street, N., Cambridge on Monday, May 27, 2024, with a service to be held in the chapel at 2 pm. A reception will take place at Corbett Funeral Home afterwards.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Westside Presbyterian Church or the Humane Society. We will miss her dearly.
