Anthony Lamb
November 10, 1934- December 29, 2023
It is with sadness that the family of Anthony (Tony) Lamb announce his passing on December 29, 2023 at Kingston Health Sciences Centre after a short illness.
Tony lived a full and vibrant life and will be remembered fondly as a husband, father, grandfather, uncle, pub owner, racehorse breeder, and friend.
Born in Cheshire England in 1934, Tony came to Canada at the age of 21, after his two-year conscription service in the British army, where he served most of his time in Germany. He arrived in Montreal, and had many different jobs across the country. He worked in a dancewear store, fought forest fires while working for the PGE railway in northern British Columbia, operated a traveling zoo in Sarnia where he wrestled alligators and milked rattlesnakes, bar-tended at Woodbine Racetrack and Talisman Ski Resort before being hired as the manager of the old Hockley Hills Resort.
It was at Hockley Hills that Tony met his wife of 50 years, Mary Jane. After their wedding in 1973, the pair moved to a small farm in Escott where Tony worked as a real estate agent and briefly owned the store in Delta that he named Mary Jane’s Ice Cream. In the early 80s, Tony, along with his two brothers Perry and Julian, and partner, Fred Smithwick, purchased the former Oliver Twist pub on King Street in Brockville, renamed it The Isaac Brock, and for two decades, the three brothers ran the iconic “The Brock”.
Tony was a consummate businessman, and the respect he had for all his co-workers and employees was shared.
A lifelong punter, Tony always dreamed of having a stable of Thoroughbred racehorses. With no money and no connection to the racehorse industry, Tony and Mary Jane bred Mary Jane’s riding horse, Chere Babu, who produced a filly, Mackenzie Delta, and she would go on to win three races at Woodbine Racetrack. That was the beginning of a wild and magical 30+ years in racehorses. After Mackenzie Delta, there was Leggolam, who won an incredible 23 races, and Crown Attorney, Tony and Mary Jane’s first stakes winner who competed in the Queen’s Plate and earned almost $1 million. Over the years, Tony and The Isaac Brock introduced many people to horse racing and it filled him with pride to watch local friends’ horses make the winner’s circle, especially Rahy’s Attorney, a son of Crown Attorney who won $2 million and competed all over the world.
Tony is survived by his wife, Mary Jane, children Katie and Perry (Mel), granddaughter Marcella, brothers Lionel (Eileen), Maurice (Patricia), Jeremy, Perry and Julian and sister Thelma as well as many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother Christopher and sisters Aileen and Jeanne.
A celebration of Tony’s brilliant life will take place at a later date.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the ICU staff at Kingston Health Science Centre for their compassionate care. For anyone wishing to make a donation in Tony’s name, please consider the LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society or the Racetrack Chaplaincy of Canada.
