On Sunday, July 14, 2024 at the age of 94, surrounded by her three daughters, Christiena (Stijntje) Hogeveen (Meppelder) nee Leugs entered into rest at St. Lawrence Lodge. She was born in Groningen, Holland on February 3, 1930, to Jakob and Wesselina Leugs. Mom lived in Holland during the German occupation and endured many hardships. At 14, she graduated from a private secretarial school at the top of her class and became a private secretary. She met her husband Harm Meppelder and it was love at first sight. They married on July 7, 1949, and emigrated to Canada two weeks later. Harm and Christiena first settled in New Brunswick where Dad’s sister, Bally McKnight, a war bride lived. A year later they moved to the Brockville area where there were more opportunities for a skilled tradesman like Harm, who was a pipefitter. Mom and Dad spent most of their married life in the Brockville area raising 5 children. In 1970 they moved to Ripley, Ontario where Dad was employed at the Douglas Point Power Plant. Two years later he died suddenly of a heart attack.
Mom moved back to Brockville where her extended family and friends lived. Five years later she met and married Marinus (Mike) Hogeveen, a widower. They had a wonderful married life travelling to Holland, British Columbia, Waterloo and St Catharines to visit family. They spent summers at their cottage on Upper Beverly Lake, and winters in Florida with their friends. Mike died of a heart attack in 1997. She was a strong, intelligent, resilient and hard-working mother and wife, who set an excellent example for her children.
After the death of our father, she went back to school to upgrade her education and then was fortunate to find work at Parke Davis. She loved her job and the friends she made there. She endured many adversities in her life but always kept a positive attitude. Blessed with a lovely singing voice she loved to sing and was an active member of the Bethel Christian Reformed Church where she had many friends. Her faith in God was an important part of her life, and she instilled this in her children. Mom was a great cook, and the family enjoyed many wonderful Sunday dinners, Christmases and special occasions together. She was skilled at knitting, crocheting and needlepoint. She was an adept card player and the saying in our family was “Mom never loses Dad never wins.”
Christiena is mourned and fondly remembered by her children, Linda Frans (Ron), Christiena Scott (Nigel), Jane Fullarton (Bruce), Don Meppelder (Lisa), and predeceased by her son John Meppelder (Trudy). She was a dear Oma to 18 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Irvine Funeral Home, 4 James St. E., Brockville. A private service will be held for the family. As expressions of sympathy donations to Bethel Christian Reformed Church will be greatly appreciated by the family.
