Mark Wayne Reid
March 15, 1959 – December 15 2023
Mark passed peacefully at Lakeridge Health in Bowmanville.
Anyone that has spent time with Mark will smile thinking of his wonderful laugh. We all enjoyed hearing that sound when we walked into a room, “Oh good, Mark is here and having fun.” He loved a good discussion or debate on many topics. He was well informed on current events and followed several sports. He had opinions on how the politicians could be creating a better world for everyone and how athletes could improve their game. If only they would listen!
Whether Mark was your blood relative or a close friend, he was respectful, thoughtful, grounded and steady. Mark was someone that could challenge your mind with his ideas and make you laugh with his wit. So many of us benefited from his lifelong loyalty.
Mark was an amazing artist. People that grew up with him in Spring Brook or went to school with him at Centre Hastings Secondary School in Madoc saw his talent right from early days. Returning to the easel in recent years was a great pleasure for Mark, and he had many fans when he shared his work on Facebook. Over the years, he took great pleasure discussing art with his stepdad, Poul Thrane. Recently, Mark found joy by painting with other artists in the Open Studio class at the Station Gallery in Whitby. They soon became fans of his work and began asking him for guidance. Mark was in his element, and his loved ones were so happy for him.
Mark was a gifted gardener and carpenter. He created stunning gardens each year, including starting hundreds of plants from seed in his greenhouse, and he enjoyed inviting people to relax on his self-made deck and view the beautiful yard.
Mark played many sports, including softball, volleyball, football and hockey in his younger years. Later he enjoyed golf, tennis and curling. When it came to golfing with Mark, it was often comedic. He had quite the slice and that led to many laughs. Recently, brother Brian gave him credit for a “hole in one” that was only discovered after some hunting in the long grass, many years ago.
One of Mark’s biggest loves was curling, and he played both socially and competitively for most of his life. He enjoyed many bonspiels as well as playing in leagues at the Stirling, Campbellford and Whitby clubs where he was a very active member. He was a great skip that enjoyed having lots of rocks in play and strategizing tricky shots.
Whether at home or at a curling club, it was a pleasure to chat with Mark after the game and review how each end ‘should’ have gone. This analytical skill applied to
everybody’s game at the club as well as any sport he viewed on TV.
Mark enjoyed cards and games throughout his life. Playing cards with family and friends at kitchen tables or picnic tables at Maloney’s campground were great times for him. Mark loved to cook and bake. It was a treat to have him prepare a tasty meal for you. He was watching cooking shows and ordering new appliances and gadgets throughout the past few months as he maintained optimism to soon be returning to the kitchen.
Mark worked in the print industry throughout his adult life. People may remember him creating advertisements for the Belleville Intelligencer newspaper and then What’s
Happening magazine. He started his own business of real estate postings for the Quinte area. The company name “On The Mark” showed his creativity. Then he took his talents to Toronto and worked in publishing with Metroland for over 20 years. Mark had countless strong friendships with his colleagues and clients. His good nature showed up whether spending time with family, long time friends or new acquaintances. It’s just who he was.
Mark was predeceased by his father, Jack Reid, Spring Brook and sister Shelly Reid, Belleville. He is survived by his mother, Helen Reid, Belleville, stepdad Poul Thrane,
Belleville, siblings Karen Ripley (Chris), Belleville, Brian Reid (Shairose), Courtice, Cheryl Reid, Toronto, and nephews Craig Ripley (Heather), Kyle Ripley (Tanisha), Ben
Ripley, Keiffer Reid, Wolf Reid (Willow), Rashaad Reid, Aydin Reid and niece Kira Providence as well as great nephews Finn and Rowan (Wolf), Jack and Mitch (Craig)
and great niece Addy (Kyle). Mark had a close relationship with many of his cousins and his predeceased grandparents Ben and Hilda Acker (Bupa and Granny) and Arthur and Augusta Reid (Grandpa and Grandma). He will be deeply missed by his friends and relatives. Mark was thankful that his siblings were his closest friends in life, and they felt the same.
The family is truly grateful for the specialists and medical teams in Durham and Toronto for their ongoing care and efforts to assist Mark in his healing the past five years,
especially the last few months in Durham. He was willing to try so many options and rebounded from setbacks again and again. His perseverance and optimism was greatly
admired by all that travelled his health journey with him.
Mark chose to not have a funeral service. If you wish to honour Mark, please consider a donation toward research for a cure for Myasthenia Gravis. Mark would be grateful for you to share what you learn to increase awareness of this challenging autoimmune disease. Donate (mgcanada.org/donate)
MG Canada Myasthenia Gravis is a chronic autoimmune disorder in which antibodies destroy the communication between nerves and muscle, resulting in weakness of the skeletal muscles. The disorder affects the voluntary muscles of the body, especially those that control the eyes, mouth, throat and limbs. The disorder can strike anyone at any age. The cause of Myasthenia Gravis is unknown and there is not yet a cure.
On his birthday this year, Mark wrote that he was feeling happy and greatly appreciated the best wishes he had received. He left a message that he would undoubtedly be glad for us to read again and take to heart. He deserves the last word,
“Life is short, and we don’t know how much we have ahead. Take the time to enjoy each and every day. I wish each of you many years of peace, fun and laughter with family and friends.”
