Obituary of Doug Abernethy
John Douglas Abernethy
Passed away peacefully surrounded by family in Port Perry on February 7th, 2024, at the age of 74.
Much loved and missed son of Muriel and beloved Rae. Adored big brother to Laurel, Alan, Ron, and Jill. Loving father (“Daddio”) of Tammy and Bryan (Judy). Cherished grandchildren, Bradyn, Savannah, Makayla, and Hailey. Proud uncle of Danny (Kelly) and Marci (Jonathan), and great uncle of Madison, Gavin, Dylan, Emmett, and Caleb.
Doug was born and raised in Bowmanville, brought up working in the paint & wallpaper business since approximately the age of 12 years old. He was the 3rd generation in the family business, running the store for the last 40 years out of the 74 years that it operated with the family. The family business originally started out as a decorating company in 1921 with Doug’s grandfather Jim Abernethy. Jim went on to open the retail store, Abernethy’s Paint & Wallpaper Ltd. in 1949 which eventually passed down to Doug’s father Rae Abernethy.
Doug’s childhood instilled a lifelong passion for baseball, dancing, and skipping school to play pool. He will be remembered as a family man who loved spending time with his family and friends, while still being a private soul who loved to relax to books and music. He had a good sense of humour as big as his heart. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
A visitation will be held on Sunday February 18th at Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home, 53 Division Street North, Bowmanville from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
Warm wishes and shared memories are more than enough. If wishing to do more than donations can be made in lieu of flowers to Sick Kids Foundation.
