Elvin Richard Towns Obituary
Elvin Richard Towns passed away at the Madawaska Valley Hospice Palliative Care on April 26, surrounded by his family. He was 92 (Jan 4, 1932 – April 26, 2024). His parents were Richard (Dick) Wyman Towns and Edith Amelia James, and he was the oldest of four boys. Elvin was predeceased by his brother Morris (Shirley) in 2021, and is survived by brothers Nelson (Kaireen), and Milton (Barb), and his best friend and companion, Derrick. He was uncle to several nieces and nephews. Sadly, his nephew Keith, (Audrey) passed away in 2023 at the age of 62.
Elvin started and ended his career working for the Ministry of Natural Resources, at its offices located at Algonquin Park’s East Gate. This cultivated a special affection for the Park, which he would go on to visit several times in the years to follow. After retirement, he took on running the post office in his home town of Madawaska. From an early age, Elvin was interested in spirituality – and consequently was drawn to the church. He considered this his vocation, and set out to take on the mission. Elvin’s interest in church music and liturgy only expanded over time, and he would devote himself to many years of serving the church. In order to fulfil this service, Elvin started off with taking piano lessons from Irene Carswell, who was a family friend, and also the organist at St. Matthews RC church in Madawaska. He then persevered to the best of his ability, and went on to learn to play the organ, which would be the genesis of what was to be many years of service to the church. Just observing him at the organ in church, it was clear that Elvin had found his niche. He spent his weekends as church organist at St. Paul and St. James United church in Madawaska (which was his church), and later on would take on the position as organist at St. Matthew’s RC church in Madawaska and at St. Martin of Tours RC church in Whitney, where he went on to play for more than 20 years! Elvin was an avid traveller, and if at any time his eyes caught the sight of a church, he would endeavour to check it out. He always felt churches too were like a box of chocolates, where you never know what you would find (to use Forrest Gump’s metaphor on life in general).
Elvin was a testament for tidiness. This was evident not only in his housekeeping, but even when he dressed up (which he enjoyed doing). He always made sure his clothes were well-ironed and shoes polished (if winter, he would put on overshoes, so as to keep the shine on his shoes). Elvin had a special attraction to tartan ties, and would pick one up in a store (if it was different) to add to his collection. He was proud to show-off his collection by wearing a different one each Sunday to church. His neatness carried over even when he was ploughing his driveway in winter. Elvin said, the finish should always look neat to the eye!
On behalf of Elvin’s family, a special thank you goes to Dr. Charles Dawes, for the wonderful care he delivered to Elvin by looking over his health and well-being for several years. A big thank you is also extended to the Madawaska Valley Hospice Palliative Care Team for the great service they provided Elvin (or whoever is in house) while he was there. Dylaina and the team at hospice (including wonderful PSW’s) were really great, and always went out of their way to make life comfortable for him.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Madawaska Valley Hospice Palliative Care would be much appreciated (thanks), or to St. Paul and St. James United church in Madawaska (Elvin’s home parish). Thanks also to St. Francis Memorial Hospital nursing staff who cared for Elvin when he had to spend some time in the medical section, and when they would come over to give him his meds in hospice. And finally, a mention of thanks is in order for Warren and Joe at the Heubner Funeral Home, for taking care of just about everything related to the funeral, which was a huge help in our time of need.
There will be visitation for Elvin on Thursday, May 2 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and from 6:00-8:00 pm, and on Friday May 3 from 10:00-11:00 am at the Heubner Funeral Home in Barry’s Bay. Elvin Richard Town’s funeral will take place on Friday, May 3rd at 12pm at St. Paul and St. James United Church in Madawaska (his home parish). His burial will follow after the church service.
