With great sadness we announce the passing of our father, at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, on Monday, October 28th, 2024, at the age of 94.
Tony loved family unconditionally; they filled his world with joy. He revelled in gatherings, dinners, social events, picnics, birthdays, and milestone celebrations.
Tony is predeceased by his beloved wife, Clara Marie (nee Nusca) (2007), and his parents, Giuseppe and Rosa (Coppolino) Celi.
He is the deeply loved father of Brenda, Bernadette (Guy), Michael (Teresa), Joseph (Alison), Paul (Michelle), and John. He is a cherished grandpa of Shannon (Nathan), Jason (Cait), Kevin (Nicki), Brandon (Emily), Jennifer (Alex), Laura (Cory), Chris (Katie), Sean, and Calvin, and a beloved great grandpa of Sienna, Carter, Cayde, Hailey, and Austen.
Tony is predeceased by his sisters, Carmela Kelly and Mary Johnston; and his brothers-in-law, Jim Inrig and Ken Kelly. He is also predeceased by Nusca in-laws Cecilia and Emilio Sguigna, Edo and Nina, Nino and Vilma, Anthony and Mary, Joseph and Lino.
He is the much-loved brother of Concetta (Connie) Inrig and brother-in-law of Keith Johnston, Beverly Nusca and Gloria Nusca. And, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and their families will hold dear his memory.
Tony nurtured his friendships; in turn, decades of caring and connection with friends enriched his life through their camaraderie, support, entertainment, empathy, and advice. He is survived by and will be deeply missed by close childhood friends, Charlie Scime, and Harold and Mary Cooper and long-time neighbours, the McNamaras. Further, his Bridge Club “family” will never lack for stories and memorable moments.
Tony was indeed the renaissance man. To support his family, his talents ranged from jewellery design to sales (appliances, typewriters, building materials). At the age of 40, he retired his business suit for blue jeans and a hard hat, a work truck, and a career in commercial construction. It took three tries until he decided it was, at last, time to retire so he could pursue other interests. These included elaborate dinners for family and friends, the aforementioned Bridge Clubs (which fed his keen interest in finding bargains for the raffle prize table), watching golf, afternoons listening to opera, and woodworking.
A special thank you to PSWs and other staff at Burloak Long Term Care, and, in his final days, for the care given by staff at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital.
Visitation will be at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stoplight north of QEW), BURLINGTON on Thursday, November 21st, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Vigil at 4:00 p.m. Funeral Mass at Holy Rosary Church, BURLINGTON, on Friday, November 22nd, at 10:00 a.m. Interment at Our Lady of Victory Mausoleum, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 600 Spring Gardens Road, BURLINGTON. Reception to follow at the Church hall; light refreshments will be served.
If desired, as an expression of sympathy, donations made to Operation Smile (Canada), the Heart & Stroke Foundation, or the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated by the family.
