Robert Lloyd Stokes Obituary
Stokes, Robert L. (December 13, 1937 – March 2, 2024) With deep sadness, we want to announce the peaceful passing of Robert “Lloyd” Stokes at his new home in Alliston on March 2nd, 2024. Born in 1937 in Sombra Township, Lloyd is survived by his wife of 58 years, M. Pauline (nee Gatecliff) Stokes, daughter Amy and grandson Hunter. Predeceased by his parents Robert and Della (nee Shears) Stokes, brother Albert, sister Margaret, sister Emma, brother Clifford, and in-laws Robert and Alice Gatecliff, and Lena MacDonald (Jack). Survived by sister Betty Watson, sister-in-law Edith Stokes, sister-in-law Lillian Somes (Fred), sister-in-law Norma Kettle (Richard), sister-in-law Ila Boshaw (Terry), brother-in-law Grant Gatecliff (Bonnie), and sister-in-law Kerry Hayden (Dave Shearim), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lloyd was proud to work for the Township of Enniskillen for 25 years as a grader operator and snow-plow driver. Prior to his work for Enniskillen, he was a dozer operator for Brandon Construction and a truck driver for Stewart Cox Limited.
In any spare time he had, he lived for baseball, being involved in Enniskillen Baseball for many years as a convener, coach and player. He was proud to coach his daughter and her teammates until his official retirement in 2010. Lloyd spoke about his baseball memories for many years, and some of his best friendships were formed on the diamond and on the bench.
Lloyd was a proud member of Oil City United Church until its closure, serving as a steward, elder, and the welcoming committee for many years. Lloyd loved to talk to everyone and anyone – often being told he could and would make friends with a fence post. He could find a commonality with anyone, and made life-long friends like the Sinclairs, the Phillips, the Taylors, the Brandons, and the Andersons.
Lloyd and Pauline lived for their parcel of land on Marthaville Road, hosting parties, family Christmas, and any holiday get-togethers that could take place. Lloyd spent many hours cutting the grass on his own property and the neighbours, puttering in his garden, and finding a use for anything and everything that ever stopped working.
After 54 years on Marthaville Sideroad, Lloyd and Pauline moved to Alliston to spend as much time as they could with their daughter and grandson.
Surviving many unusual health conditions, Lloyd lived and died on his own terms, refusing to give up until he knew his family, the thing he cared the most about, was settled and happy.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be made in Lloyd’s honour to The Heart and Stroke Foundation or The Woodland Cultural Centre.
Cremation has taken place. Service and Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
