Thomas Henry Perry of Central Chebogue, NS, passed away peacefully at the Villa St. Joseph du Lac on December 23, 2024, at the age of 81. Born July 16, 1943, he was the beloved son of the late Walter E. and Ruth (Lewis) Perry.
Tom embraced many careers throughout his life. He was a refrigeration and electrical journeyman. Alongside two close friends, he founded and operated Coastal Refrigeration. In 1973 he relocated his young family to Barrington, where he built and managed The Cape Sable Ice Company. He loved his work and life in Barrington. He and his wife Hazel made many good friends there while raising their family. While living in Barrington Tom also worked at Clearwater Lobster and CFS Barrington. In 1997, he and Hazel moved to Fort McMurray, Alberta where he obtained HVAC certification for work. After 14 years they returned to Tom’s childhood home on the farm in Chebogue which he renovated and made his place of retirement.
In earlier years, Tom cherished time at the camp known to family and locals as “Papa Tom’s Cabin” which he built on his island in Clements Pond. He loved the outdoors, hiking, fishing, and canoeing. He enjoyed his back packing trips to Scotland and Dominica. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and volunteer. Tom served as president of the Barrington Historical Society. He was a deacon and Sunday School superintendent at Temple Baptist Church in Barrington. He was an active member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Fort McMurray. Tom was member and elder of New Heights Baptist Church in Arcadia. He was a member and president of the Central Chebogue United Baptist Heritage Society. Tom spent many years in the cadet program. He served as Commanding Officer (CO) of the Sea Cadets in Yarmouth and later as CO of Air Cadets in Barrington. His love of the water inspired him to become a founding member of the Chebogue Aquatic Club. When he returned to Chebogue, he accepted bookkeeping responsibilities for the club.
Above all, his love for his lord and savior sustained him throughout his life, including many years of poor health. Everybody who knew Tom held him in high regard and was impressed by his positive, determined, encouraging attitude, especially in the face of serious challenges. His patience, honesty, integrity and wisdom were respected by all who knew him. He always expressed pride and love for his children and grandchildren and appreciated their accomplishments.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Hazel L. Perry (Churchill); his children: Philip (Marilea) of Edmonton AB; Monica of Barrington NS; Trevor (Lynne) of Chebogue NS; and Brock (Erin) of Somersworth, NH.
