Elaine Diane Kehoe passed to Glory peacefully on Thursday Oct 31, 2024 at Yarmouth Heights where she resided with her husband Wayne. She was born on July 28th 1948 in Yarmouth NS. Elaine was raised out on her fathers farm on Cranberry Head, Pembroke NS. She grew up with her first two brothers, Donald and Robert, and her sister Barbie. Her brother Kendall was born after she had married and moved to Halifax. Wayne and Elaine married in 1969 and moved to Halifax, setting up in a small home in Lakeside.
Elaine had two sons while they lived there, David and Shawn. In 1975 they moved to a house on the St. Margret’s Bay road in Timberlea. In Timberlea, in 1977, they adopted Carrie, who it seemed was made to be a part of this family. Elaine and Wayne did foster care there in Timberlea for twenty years or so, welcoming many children into their home, which continued to grow.
Elaine was always very active in her home Church, first in Chegoggin, and then in Timberlea. Serving as church clerk, Pioneer club leader, and singing in the ladies quartet. She was known to be a unique and lovable character, teasing and being teased by one and all.
The house in Timberlea was made into a place of welcome for so many. Foster kids, neighbor kids, friends and neighbors. They fostered 40+ children over the years they participated in the program. The tea pot was always on, and you might get a cookie, some pickles or a haircut. It was not uncommon to have a mother call and ask if their child was at our house only to be told – “Yes – they’re asleep on our couch”. The warmth of that place was almost entirely due to Elaine’s gift of hospitality.
When the kids were grown and out, Elaine and Wayne retired home to Yarmouth. Settling into their house on the Wyman road, and into their new home Church, Temple Baptist. Elaine continued to work with children in Sunday School, played the piano. She loved her second church family at Greenville Baptist Church where she played the piano as well, and enjoyed singing with John Foote and others.
Lastly, Elaine, with declining mobility was able to reside with Wayne at the Yarmouth Heights retirement facility. The staff there have been warm and caring toward them and we thank them as a family for their continuing work.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon and Alda, her brothers Donald and Robert and her sister Barbie. She is survived by her husband Wayne, her brother Kendall, (Elizabeth). Children David, (Mercedes) Kehoe, Carrie Kehoe and Shawn, (Darlene) Kehoe. Grandchildren, Sarah, (Jesse), Ben,(Breanna), Jacob, Connor (Isabelle) and Megan.
