Donald Frederick “Don” Slatter passed away on Friday, December 13, 2024, in the Veterans Memorial Hospital in Halifax, at the age of 96. Born in Gloucester, England, he was the son of the late Reginald and Una (Lane) Slatter.
With war raging in Europe through his early teens, he joined the British Royal Navy at the age of sixteen. His service took him to many areas of the world including the Antarctic. In 1950, he transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy and was soon sent to serve in the Korean war. He served on various ships and in numerous locations until retiring from the navy in 1972 as a First Class Chief Petty Officer.
Civilian life led him to Employment and Immigration Canada where he worked as an Employment Councillor until his retirement in 1990.
Don is survived by his children, Lori (Frank) and Mike (Dorothy); grandchildren, Matthew and Nicole. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Shirley (Cochrane).
Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). No visitation by request. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 5, 2025 in the funeral home chapel, followed by a reception in the funeral home’s Elmcroft Reception Centre. The committal for both Don and Shirley will follow in Ste. Croix Cemetery, St. Croix. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Don may be made to Windsor Elms Village, 174 Falmouth Dyke Rd., Falmouth, NS B0P 1P0 or Ste. Croix United Church, 5477 Hwy 1, St. Croix, NS B0N 2E0.
