William “Billy” Henry Hughes, aged 81, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, passed away on March 20, 2024, at Melville Lodge. Born on April 20, 1942, in Fleetwood, United Kingdom, Billy immigrated with his family to Nova Scotia, Canada, at the age of 14. In 1964, he married Shirley Petitpas from Point du Chene, New Brunswick.
Billy pursued his education at Dalhousie University, where he earned a degree in accounting. His career included service at the Post Office and later at the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Billy was an avid collector of stamps, coins, flags, model airplanes, oil tankers, and spaceships, Billy also enjoyed playing darts and hosted a mini dart league in his basement. His creativity shone through in the funny poems he wrote for family and colleagues, and he had a strong interest in climate science, often sharing his knowledge through a newsletter. He spent many hours accompanying his wife, Shirley, on birdwatching expeditions across the province.
Billy’s memory will be cherished by his daughter, Tracy (Stan); siblings, Violet and Stuart; grandchildren, Corwin and Evander; and a wide circle of friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Shirley; son, Stephen; brother, Basil; and parents, Basil and Olive.
Billy will be deeply missed by all who knew him. The family will receive visitors 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, March 27th in the Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, 13549 Peggys Cove Road, Upper Tantallon. A graveside service will be held 11 am Thursday, March 28th in William Black Memorial Cemetery, Glen Margaret In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada (alzheimer.ca/en ) in Billy’s memory.
