Rosalie Anne (MacKay)
Canning – It is with great sadness that I announce the
passing of my mother, Rosalie, peacefully on Thursday, June 6, 2024 in
Debert Court. Rosalie was the second child of 9 born to the late
Wallace and Mildred (Fulton) Mackay in Newton Mills, Nova
Scotia.
Rosalie grew up on the
family farm working with her father and family members.
After completing high school at Brookfield Rural High School, Rosalie
attended Normal College in Truro, completing a book keeping
program. She held many positions over the years doing books
for several companies; the most memorable was the Springside Credit
Union which was in our house for many years.
Rosalie married her
husband of 69 years, Laurie Canning (deceased 2023) on August 12,
1954. Rosalie was a stay at home mother, until her family
had grown; along with this she played the organ in church on Sundays
also at many weddings and funerals. She was also involved in
the church and UCW. Rosalie enjoyed dancing, there were very
few Saturday evenings missed going to an old time dance somewhere in
Colchester County.
In 1980, Rosalie and
Laurie moved to Sus, New Brunswick to open a business where she did
the bookwork. The dancing continued in Sus, joining a
square dance group and often amazed the locals at dances doing the
polka to a good fiddle tune. Following their retirement
Rosalie and Laurie moved to Lower Onslow.
Rosalie is survived by
son, Jamie (Tami); brothers, Kenneth (Evelyn) MacKay, Gordon (Cheryl)
MacKay, Gary (Eleanor) MacKay; sisters, Ethel (Ross, deceased) Ervin,
Leta (Glen) Ells, Janet (John, deceased) Kent, Mary (Rodney) Kincaid,
Shirley (Howard, deceased) Graham; grandchildren, Janelle,
Joanna and Matthew; great grandchildren, Addison, Pippa, Maddyn, and
Kai; extended family members; several nieces and nephews and
Terry and David.
Visitation will be
held 12 – 12:45 pm on Sunday, June 16, 2024 and funeral service will
be 1 pm in Trinity United Church, Upper Onslow, Reverend Glen MacLean
officiating. A reception will follow in the church basement, followed
by burial in Riverside Cemetery, Upper Stewiacke.
If so desired
donations to the Riverside Cemetery, Upper Stewiacke, Presbyterian
Cemetery, Diligent River, or to a charity of choice are
welcomed.
Arrangements have been
entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young
