Obituary for
Rachael Hencher
Rachael Elizabeth Hencher (1991-2024)
Valley, Nova Scotia- Just before the sun rose on Friday, April 19, 2024 our beloved daughter Rachael departed this world. Following graduation from the University of King’s College in Halifax, Nova Scotia she spent two years in post graduate studies at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. In October of 2017, a month before she was to move to England, she was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Unfortunately, the prognosis was never favourable, with subsequent treatments and operations only serving to slow the tumour’s growth for periods of time.
Rachael was 32, naturally artistic and a self-professed lover of books, tea, cats and dogs. Her cherished Miss Kitty went on before her this January, but Scarlet, whom Rachael found abandoned in a parking lot when at Queen’s, was with her always. Ella, the puppy she chose for us almost eleven years ago, was Rachael’s faithful guard dog during her last months.
Rachael was the daughter of Myra and Ed Hencher (Valley) and younger sister of Nathan (Valley). She was the niece of Rhonda and Tick Watts (Charlottetown), John and Andrea Hencher (Dartmouth) and Joanne Hencher and partner Twisty Walsh (Charlottetown). Rachael was predeceased by her maternal grandparents Shirley (McNutt) and Brice Stokes (Truro) and her paternal grandparents Joan (Storey) and Edward Hencher (Charlottetown).
There are so many individuals and groups who helped us all along this journey. We’d like to acknowledge the following:
Flowstar Industrial and staff where Rachael worked for a short while when she was able. Your support and kindness will never be forgotten.
The VON of Colchester County who assisted us over the past three months. You were all so amazingly competent and caring. Such a difficult job you do yet with such professionalism and humanity.
The staff, doctors, nurses, admin and maintenance/house-keeping at our hospital here in Truro and those at the Infirmary/ Dickson Centre/QEII in Halifax. We’ve seen firsthand how hard you work and say “Thank You.” Special acknowledgements to Dr. Adrienne Weeks, Dr. Mary MacNeil, Dr. Lara Best, Dr. Kristin Ikeda, Dr. Nina Makkar and Dr. Donald Pugsley who was Rachael’s family physician until his retirement.
To our wonderful friends who never wavered in their love and care, may all your kindness come back to you many times over. To Rachael’s special friends Ashley (UK), Terra (BC), Emma (NS) and Sara (USA) a heartfelt thank you for being there for her. May your lives be forever filled with joy.
No visitation or flowers. A private service will be held later this spring. In lieu of flowers please donate to finance@qe2foundation.ca and request in a note that your donation be used for brain cancer research. Thank you all.
“Laugh as we always laughed
at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me. Pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word
that is always was.
Let it be spoken without effect.
Without the trace of shadow on it.”
