Obituary for
Leona Murphy
Leona Pearl Murphy (Lindsay) passed away on December 4, 2024, at the age of 90 years in Wynn Park Villa, Truro, surrounded by family and the wonderful staff of Wynn Park. Formerly of Brentwood and Lower Sackville, Leona lived the past several years in Truro. Leona was born on April 2, 1934, in East Stewiacke, the daughter of the late Hugh and Ella Lindsay.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Jack; sons, Michael and John; brothers, Doug and Donnie; sisters, Barb and Marion and her best friend, Betty Drysdale.
She is survived by her younger sister, Irma; sons, Donald (Cecilia), Shane and Darryn (Sheri); daughters-in-law, Susan and Donna (Jim); grandchildren, Cory (Danielle), Todd (Stephanie), Ryan (Lindsay), Devon (Stephanie), Matthew (Mili) and Rachel (Corey) as well as her great grandchildren, Kyle, Connor, Cassidy, Crosby, Kourtney, Hadley, Britney, Kayla, Emma, Connor, Parker, Cooper, Brinlee, Eli, Garnet and Rudy.
As a teenager, Leona left East Stewiacke and headed by train for the bright lights of Halifax in search of adventure and work. At that time there was a train stop beside the Simpsons-Sears department store, so she decided to get off and apply for work. She was hired on the spot. She quickly became friends with her coworker, Betty Dobson and they soon shared an apartment. It was near the store on a quiet street, or so they thought. You see, the next-door neighbour would come home late on his motorcycle and make a lot of noise. Leona asked him if he could be quieter because the noise from his motorcycle was waking them. The neighbour turned out to be Jack Murphy and living across the street was Jack’s best friend, Maurice Drysdale. Yes, Leona and Betty married the boys next door!
Leona was mainly a stay-at-home mom and together with Jack, provided a loving home for their five sons in Lower Sackville and later in Brentwood.
Besides her first job at Simpsons-Sears, she also worked in Truro at the Ho Ho Restaurant and the Colchester Regional Hospital where she was a Union Representative.
She made friends easily and was generous with her time whether doing fundraising or being a Beaver Leader, but what brought Leona the most joy was spending time with family, especially playing cards (Scat) with her grandchildren. She was a lot of fun to be with and lived a full life. She will be deeply missed.
At her request, there will no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place. There will be a celebration of life and burial at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS. Online condolences may be made at www.ColchesterCommunity.com.
