Leona Brake – 80, Truro Heights. It is with great
sadness that we announce the passing of our wife,
mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Surrounded by the
knowledge of all the love and prayers from family and friends and with
her partner of 61 years by her side, we said goodbye to mom on
Wednesday, December 25, 2024.
She grew up in St. Alban’s, Newfoundland and was
the eldest of 13 children. Mom had a great love of the outdoors and in
the early days enjoyed being on the water, fishing, camping and
gardening. She raised her family and throughout life’s
seasons welcomed grandchildren and then great grandchildren. The one
thing that never changed was if you found dad, mom was sure to be not
far behind.
In the later years, although she had to watch from the
sidelines more, she was still able to dictate the placement of things,
keep us in line and note “slight imperfections”. She spent
time in the backyard on the swing with dad, taking in the nature
around her and reminiscing.
She was more than our mother. She was our best friend and has
carried us through our toughest and greatest moments. They say a
mother’s hug lasts long after they go and here’s
hoping it carries us through as we face this next
chapter.
She leaves behind her husband, David; children, Michelle,
Deanna (Tim), Dave (Alexa); grandchildren, Brandon (Carmody), Kyle,
Rowan; great grandchildren, Lucy, Eli; siblings, Owen, Edmund, Calvin,
John, Elizabeth, Ann, Marion; a large number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, Samuel and Uriel (Wilcott) Cox;
siblings, Anthony, Bernard, Samuel, Christopher,
Angela.
Our family wishes to thank Dr. Min Lee and the staff of
Halifax Infirmary, QEII for all their care, support and
guidance.
Rest easy mom, you are now free from pain; and
don’t worry, we will watch over dad until you meet
again.
Honouring Leona’s wishes, there will not be a
visitation or funeral service. If so desired, donations in
Leona’s memory to QEII Foundation or Christmas Daddies are
welcomed. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Tributes, words of
