Ivan George MacDonald passed away on the morning of May 22,
2024 in Halifax, NS, in his 90th year, watched
over and cherished by his loved ones. His health had been in a slow
decline for some time, which accelerated in the past two weeks.
Through it all, he received the most capable, devoted care imaginable
from Marion, his wife of 66 years.
Ivan was born in Chatham, NB, the second of six children of
John and Edna (MacArthur) MacDonald. He grew up in Kouchibouguac as
part of a boisterous, loving extended family. He attended school there
and in Richibucto, later graduating from Mt. Allison Academy and the
Maritime Forest Ranger School. Following a family tradition, Ivan
worked in the lumbering industry and as a scaler for Irving Pulp and
Paper. Later, he sold chainsaws, snowmobiles and used cars through his
company, Fundy Sales & Service.
He was fortunate to wed a gem of a wife, Marion Graham, in
May of 1958. They lived in Kouchibouguac, grew their family in Saint
John and passed many wonderful summers at their beloved cottage in
Kent County. Five years ago, they moved to Lower Sackville, NS to be
near some of their family. Ivan was a long-time member of St. Columba
Presbyterian Church in Saint John, NB, serving in many capacities over
the years. He was also a member and Past Master of Carleton Union
Lodge F&AM.
Besides his loving wife, Ivan leaves to mourn, four
daughters: Deborah Hale (Michael), Patricia Galbraith (Gary), Ivy
Moore (Michael), all of Lower Sackville, NS; Cyndi Corscadden (Brian
Phelps), Calgary, AB; son, Graham MacDonald (Andrea), Whitby, ON;
former son-in-law, Tom Corscadden. Grampie Ivan will be much missed by his
grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Melissa and Trevor Plett, Felix
and Rena; Ian and Allison Galbraith; Andrew Galbraith; Amanda and
Chris Madore and Addison; Robyn Hale and Vivian Frost; Bradley and
Darragh Galbraith, Oliver and Theodore; Deidre and Nathan Stone;
Brendan Hale; James Hale; Ben MacDonald and Dane MacDonald. Ivan is
also survived by loving sisters, Audrey Archibald (Leland) and
Georgina Daigle (Tom); brother, Kenneth (Dolly); brother-in-law, Harry
McIlroy; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents;
brother, Lee; sister, Doris McIlroy; sister-in-law,
Carol.
Ivan’s family would like to thank staff from
Bayshore who helped with his care and respite. We also wish to thank
staff at Halifax Infirmary, Lower Sackville Paramedics and staff at
Cobequid Health Centre, who were so professional, respectful and
caring toward Ivan and our family in his final days. If so desired,
donations in Ivan’s memory to Cobequid Health Centre
Foundation (www.cobequidfoundation.ca)
or charity of choice would be greatly appreciated. Tributes, words of
