Obituary for
Elizabeth “Betty” Starratt (Evans)
Starratt, Elizabeth “Betty” Martha (Evans) – Age 92, Truro. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Elizabeth “Betty” M. Starratt at home on March 3, 2024. Born in North Sydney, Betty was the eldest child of the late Leo and Elizabeth (Adair) Evans. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth; her sister, Jean Bragg (Jack); her brothers, Leo “Bud” (Marjory) and Robert. Betty is survived by her sister-in-law, Donna Evans and former sister-in-law, Lorna Tucker.
Betty will be deeply missed by her daughter, Constance Elizabeth (Sheldon) Scott; son, John Kenneth (Tara); her grandsons, who were her pride and joy, Evan (Alexandra) and Brenden. She was a very devoted grandmother and a huge part of their whole lives. Only two months ago, she was blessed with a great granddaughter, Ellie Elizabeth. Even with her failing health, she was able to meet, hold and unconditionally love her namesake. Betty was lovingly known as the matriarch of the family.
Betty moved to Truro in 1950 to attend Normal College. While boarding in Truro, she met her future husband, Kenneth. They were married in North Sydney in 1952 and were happily married for just over 50 years until Ken’s passing in 2002.
Her career began with teaching in North Sydney for two years. Betty and Ken moved back to the mainland where she taught for another 33 years in the Truro area with the majority of that time teaching at Bible Hill Central Elementary School.
Betty was defined by that twinkle in her eye, her infectious smile and her Cape Breton charm. She had a sense of humour and wit that were second to none. She made and maintained friends wherever she went and miraculously remembered almost every child’s name that she taught. Betty was truly an amazing and one-of-a-kind lady.
She was a member of the St. John’s Anglican Church in Truro and a member of the NSTU until her passing.
At this time, we would like to thank Dr. Stephen Ellis, Dr. Jamie Grandy, Dr. Cortney Smith and the Palliative Care team as well as the VON (RNs). We would also like to thank the team of private caregivers, Jane, Margo, Valerie, Anne, Deb and Millie, who all provided the best and devoted care possible which allowed her to remain in her own home until her passing. Thank you.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 10th from 6:30-9 pm. A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 11th at 2 pm both in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. Rev.
