Obituary
Today, we celebrate a life lived. A life full of love, light, and a wild spirit. Emily was a force and to know her was to love her. Her infectious laugh filled the room and her kindness filled the hearts of countless people she had served throughout her years working in the healthcare field.
Emily grew up in The Netherlands on a farm with her parents and ten siblings before she and Wim packed their bags and immigrated to Canada…in January. Surviving the winter, they decided to stay and eventually settled down on a farm in Wallace Bay, where together they raised four wonderful children: Steven (Jennifer), Juliette (Callum), Rose (Steve), and Niels (Brittany). Mema/Oma’s immense love was wholly felt by all her kleinkinderen: Keegan, Brody, Tucker, Theo, Sofie, and Augustus. Each one knowing they were part of the special story in her heart. Never turning down a chance to dogsit some cherished pups, Findley and Mack also felt the love in her snuggles.
Later, moving closer to the water in Wallace and Tatamagouche, Emily set her sights on new adventures. She answered the calls of friends as she careened down the embankment with a kayak in one hand and a bottle of wine in the other to soak up the many beautiful sunsets on the water that she loved so much. She chauffeured endless road trip adventures that were filled with the absurd stories of a bestseller.
Never one to turn down a good book, Emily always had a good collection and was always eager to push the latest Leslie Crewe novel into someone’s hands. She was also not one to shy away from a good board game. Emily was a killer Rummikub player (cheater) with many questionable wins.
Mom’s life was filled with an unstoppable spirit that led to a life so incredibly rich with wonderful adventures, great wine, and simply the best people. Family was always her cornerstone, and she, our lighthouse, our ever-guiding light to purpose, love, and home.
We want to offer our most heartfelt thank you to the staff at the North Cumberland Health Care Center and Palliative Care Support Services for their compassion and genuine support in these last weeks. These truly remarkable friends who went beyond and swallowed Mom and us up in their love and support. To be cared for by her work family was a truly wonderful gift. We would not have gotten through this without them.
A Celebration of Life will be held at The Lobster Factory in Pugwash on Friday, September 20th, 5:30 pm – 8 pm.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the North Cumberland Health Care Center, Palliative Care Services, or charity with special meaning for yourself and/or Emily.
