Stephen James MacLellan
1937 – 2024
Stephen James MacLellan passed away at the Northside Community Health Centre on Saturday, November 9, after a prolonged illness, which he accepted with great courage. He received wonderful care from the entire hospital staff, for this we are most grateful.
Steve was born in Centerville, Inverness, in 1937 to Lauchie and Mary MacLellan, He was the oldest of eight children: Steve, Peggy (Ross Jenkins and their three children), John (Isabelle Chiasson and their three children), Kenny (Sharon O’Riley and their two children), Annabelle (Jim MacDonald and their four children), Kathleen (tus Feehan and their two children), Johnena (Jeff Lee and their three children), Mary Celine.
After graduation from Mabou High and St. F.X, he moved to Sudbury Ontario where he was employed as a Hoistman in the hard rock mines. Many years later he trained employees on this discipline at the Redpath mine in Papua, Indonesia.
In 1978 Steve married Catherine Campbell, of Sudbury. He shared in raising her five children; Jane (Roger Sauvee and their two children), Debbie (Bobby Jalbert and their two children), Normena (John Monoghan and their two children), Kelly (Gerry Chaumont and their son), Roddie (Tracy Funk and their daughter). Steve felt very fortunate to be a part of their lives. He was proud of the grandchildren scholastically, and especially their sports achievements.
In 2004, Steve moved back to his beloved Cape Breton, the Promised Land on Lauchie’s Mountain on MacLellan Road in Centerville. He loved the family farm and his garden that he tended to every summer and generously shared the harvest. That summer he danced his way into Marie Skinner’s heart. They married in 2011 and he immediately embraced her children and grandchildren, Troy (Nancy and their two children), Trevor (Elly Yu and their two sons), Todd (Maria Escobar and their three children), Steven (Catherine Grant), and Janice (Mike Gillespie and their daughter).
Steve and Marie were very fortunate to enjoy traveling in their senior years. They visited USA, Singapore, Asia, Africa, Hawaii, Europe and the South Pacific. Their favorite trip was the one that took them back home. Steve enjoyed all sports, and shared lots of trivia in baseball, golf and hockey. He coached baseball in Sudbury and in later years, he was very involved in the annual Bernie Meagher baseball tournament in Brook Village. He had a special interest Hockey especially the Sudbury teams and the Cape Breton Eagles. He loved a good game of tarbish, but he had a short fuse when losing in either discipline.
Upon his return to Cape Breton he soon realized socialization was high on the agenda. He embraced his Scottish heritage at concerts, square dances, and entertaining people by playing the spoons alongside the fiddler. Summers also included great times at MacLeod’s Campground in Dunvegan, where he enjoyed the beautiful beach, sunsets, and many memorable campfires. Above all, his most precious times were at the farm, where his four wonderful, hard-working sisters and their families carried on the family tradition of hosting celebratory dinners for every event. The farmhouse walls were bursting with relatives and friends, and always ended by steppen’er off with a square set in the kitchen.
Similarly as Steve included Marie’s children in his heart, Marie also cherished all of his Sudbury family. Their trips back to Ontario were most endearing and embraced the bond that has brought these people together.
In over 50 years of Mining it was necessary that you bring you own lunch. This became a chore for his wife, something she always took great care in preparing. When she became ill, this was Steve’s duty that he disliked. He would often say when I die you can bury me in this lunch can. This wish will be granted.
In the past six years Steve and Marie opened their home to university students from India and Africa, who were scrambling for lodging. These students soon became family and enhanced our lives learning their culture, Religions, and lifestyles. They also received a great insight into the Cape Breton way of life. The often expressed a part of their hearts will always be in our beautiful island. This was our reward to teach foreign students to love our homeland as much as we do.
Steve was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Catherine, son Roddy, sister in childhood Mary Celine, sister and brother-in-law Kathleen and tus Feehan, a brother-in-law Jimmy MacDonald.
Steve was a devout Catholic who took great comfort in this faith. His life will be celebrated in Brook Village on Friday, November 15. Visitation will be at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church beginning at 12:00, with a funeral mass at 2:00. A reception will follow in the church hall.
