Gaza Andrew Soltesz
Gaza Andrew Soltesz, 93, of Kentville, passed away peacefully at the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, on November 1, 2023. Born in Sydney, Cape Breton, he was the son of the late Stephen and Susannah (Toth) Soltesz and the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Gaza was a lighthouse keeper. His first posting was on Guyon Island, Cape Breton, Maughers Beach, west of McNab’s Island, Sambro Island, and finally, The Salvages Lighthouse. After light keeping and until retirement, Gaza spent twenty more years as a Marine Aids Technician servicing lighthouses, harbour beacons, and all other harbour and shore navigation aids across Nova Scotia for the federal government.
Gaza is survived by his children, Gerard Soltesz (Karen Drew-Soltesz), New Minas, Gezele (Roy MacMillan), Lantz, grandson, Derek MacMillan, great-grandson, Connor MacMillan and great-granddaughter, Madison MacMillan, as well as nieces and nephews and extended family members.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Rita (MacLellan), brothers, Stephen, Louis, and Joseph, and sisters, Mary (James Buel) and Helen (Terry Currie).
A visitation for Gaza will be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, from 6-8 p.m. in JM Jobes Funeral Home Ltd, Sydney Mines. A Funeral mass to celebrate his life will be held Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at 11 a.m. in St. Joachim Church, Boularderie, with Rev. Chinonso Alaribe officiating. Donations in Gaza’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
