Joan Carolyn VanDusen
Albert Bridge
It is with deep sadness that we the family announce the passing of Joan Carolyn VanDusen on Friday November 22, 2024, in St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish.
Born in Scarborough on June 22, 1944, she was the daughter of the late William and Olive (Palmer) Purcell.
Joan (Nanny) in her early years worked in Toronto in the Public Service in administration where she met her best friend and soul mate George (Bubba). They with their two daughters relocated several times throughout Ontario and then Prince Edward Island before eventually settling in Cape Breton. Nanny was later trained as an Early Childhood Educator and also lead a Brownie unit in Louisbourg for many years. But her greatest joy and passion definitely came from her grandchildren. It was rare to see her without at least one of her six grandchildren in the car. If you ask any one of them they would say Nanny was the best grandmother they could ever ask for. She loved and cared for each of them fiercely and never missed a concert, play, recital, art show, volleyball, baseball, basketball or soccer game. She would drop everything if any one of them needed anything. She loved the Toronto Raptors and the Blue Jays and spent many hours cheering for them. She also loved all animals and they loved her. Nanny had a charismatic presence and we will miss her immensely but we know Bubba is waiting for her in heaven with open arms. We love you Nanny!
Joan is survived by her daughters Karen (Tom MacPhee) , Sydney, and Sandra (Mark) Sajatovich, Antigonish, grandchildren Laura, Sarah (Jordan), Georgia, Mitchell, Gabriel, and Rachel.
Joan was predeceased by her husband George.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A private family burial will take place at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the SPCA or charity of choice.
The family would like to thank the staff of St. Martha’s Hospital for their devoted care and attention during her stay.
