Eugene MacNeil
September 28, 2024
It is with great sadness that we, the family of Eugene “Mack” MacNeil, announce his passing at his home in Sydney on September 28, 2024.
Dad was born September 2, 1934. He was the son of the late Harry Beaman MacNeil and Margaret MacNeil.
He is survived by his sons and their families; George and Debbie (Amanda, Jody and Michael), John and Theresa (Ronnie and Jessie), Robbie and Sharon (Taylor and Matthew), Jason and Jan (Hayden and Lucas), Stephen and Elissa; grandchildren, Chelsea, Kylie and Kodi; as well as his special great-grandchildren; sister Becky (Sonny) MacAulay; brothers Robbie (Jean), Joey (Marie) Cameron and sister-in-law Jean MacKinnon.
He was predeceased by his wife Florence (MacKinnon), sons (his little buddy) Ronnie, Paddy and wife his Jennifer; granddaughter Tara Ballantyne; sisters Lillian, Catherine, Peggy, Rose and Margie; brothers Ellsworth, Ronald, Harry, John and George.
From an early age Mack worked construction and became self employed doing concrete work throughout the Cape Breton area up until his retirement. He took pride in his work both on the job and at his home and spent countless hours with his grandchildren in the backyard. In life he was truly a man of great integrity, excellent work ethics and hard work which he passed on to his family. Although a quiet man his life spoke volumes to all who met or knew him. There were many times when you would meet someone who remembered his name and would compliment his work.
His love of children is evident in the many special connections he had with each of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He had a great sense of humor and loved to play jokes on his family. Papa was their “superhero.” Mack acquired a love of animals from Florence and throughout the years they had many special cats and dogs become important members of their home. We loved him with all of our hearts and held onto him for as long as we could and this is why he will be greatly missed.
Mack was blessed to have dedicated and caring family members who went above and beyond to ensure he was where he wanted to be; at home. Mack experienced God’s love each and everyday and is now in his final resting place; reunited with loved ones in heaven. Mack was not only cared for by his loving family but also Dr. Greg Myatt and office staff who played a pivotal part in his care. To the many VON nurses who came to his home; you gave him hope and great care. We as a family are indebted to Linda of Palliative Care who made him smile each and every time she visited and lead us on this journey.
Throughout his young son’s (Ronnie) illness he learned to trust in God even amidst such difficult times. He was an active member in the Church as well as the Catholic Charismatic Renewal alongside his wife Florence. Throughout the years they touched and changed the lives of many people. Mack was never a materialistic man and once wrote, “I did get to know God’s love and try to grow in my love for Him. At least I can take that with me. If I had one wish only it would be for everyone in the world to experience God. God’s blessings to everyone!”
A funeral service to celebrate Eugene’s life will take place on Saturday October 12, 2024 at 11 a.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel with Father Bill Burke officiating.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to IWK, Operation Smile or charity of one’s choice.
