Elizabeth “Honey” Burke
Whitney Pier
It is with sadness that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of Elizabeth Wilhelmina “Honey” Burke on
Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born August 4, 1946, in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Wesley Sr. and Gizella (Marketch) Nichols.
Honey is survived by her husband, Ronald “Ronnie”; daughter, Shawna (Liam) Lawlor, Fletcher’s Lake, NS: son, Ron “Bud” (Marsha), St. John’s, NL; sister, Heather Donovan, Albert Bridge; sister-in-law, Judy Nichols, Whitney Pier; and grandchildren, Evan Tummillo, Kira and Adan Lawlor, and Brooke and Madison Burke.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Joanne Elizabeth Colford (Burke) and brother, Wesley Jr. “Tootsie” Nichols.
In her early years, Honey formed lasting friendships that would guide her throughout her life. In particular, her childhood schoolmate and life-long friend, Sherry Huelin, was always close by Honey’s side, whether working together at David’s Groceteria on Charlotte Street, being members of the Whitney Pier Air Cadets, or staying connected throughout the years, even when distance separated them, their daily phone calls and annual visits always kept their close friendship alive.
Honey always enjoyed a bit of entertainment, whether it be hosting family and friends for holiday dinners, especially her fan favorite spaghetti dinner or going out to Mira Gut for the annual birthdays weekend at the bungalow, Honey could always be found doing what she loved to do most, cooking for the masses, and having a dance and a good laugh with family and friends.
During her working years, Honey worked at Keddy’s Motel, as well as spent many years providing home care to several wonderful people who she held dear to her heart.
When not in the kitchen cooking, Honey would look forward to her evenings at the bingo hall hoping to win the big jackpot, spending time with her extended family at the Seniors Complex in the Pier, or playing darts at the Pensioner’s Club with her life partner and husband, Ronnie.
The family would like to take the opportunity to thank members of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Dialysis Unit for the many years of care they provided Honey, first responders and attending physicians, and Kollin Weatherbee and team at Sydney Memorial Chapel for their professionalism and empathy.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, November 12th from 4-7 pm. A graveside service will take place at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, November 13th at 3 pm with Rev. Paul Murphy officiating.
Following the graveside service, please join the family at Sydney Memorial Chapel for a reception.
Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
