MATHESON, Donald Charles
Sydney, NS
It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of Donald Charles Matheson on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney on March 9, 1945, Donnie was the son of the late Donald and Nellie (MacLellan) Matheson.
Donnie spent his early years on Mira Road, where he began raising his family. As his family grew, he made other family homes on Morrison Road and later Silverwood Drive, creating lasting memories along the way. A self-made man, Donnie was a successful businessman, he was the proud owner of Kenmount Ford, he retired in 2009 with his son Brett by his side. Donnie purchased the dealership in 1981 after starting at the bottom and working his way up. With years of hard work and dedication and being a true “Ford man,” Donnie earned numerous awards from The Ford Motor Company of Canada and the Dealer Association. His humble beginnings fueled his drive to provide a wonderful life for his family. Donnie’s passion for life was evident in the time he spent with his family and friends. A natural socializer, he never missed an opportunity to enjoy a good gathering. Even in his later years, Donnie remained active, always willing to lend a helping hand to friends, neighbours, and family.
For six months of the year, Donnie cherished life in Florida alongside his beloved wife of 57 years, Carolyn. He found joy in golf, both in the game and in the camaraderie it brought. The friendships he made through his golfing adventures were deeply meaningful to him. Donnie referred to his friends as his “buddy”, in his honour his golfing buddies called their group “The Buddy Group”. In Cape Breton Donnie was a longtime member of Lingan Golf Club and later joined The Lakes Golf Club, similarly down south in Florida he was a longtime member of Fiddlesticks Country Club and later joined The Verandah Golf Club, all of which he spent countless memorable days on the course.
In the summers, Donnie loved his time at Northside East Bay “out the land”, taking in the tranquility of the water, enjoying boating, and working on the property alongside his son Brett and brother-in-law David Lloyd. Donnie’s life was enriched by the many wonderful people he met over the years, friendships that stood the test of time. One of his greatest sources of pride was his grandson, Devon, whom he adored. Watching Devon follow in his footsteps at a Ford dealership in B.C. brought him immense joy.
Donnie is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn “Carol” Matheson (Lloyd); his daughter, Leanne Matheson, B.C.; his son, Brett Matheson, Howie Center; and grandson, Devon Matheson, B.C.. He is also survived by his sister, Marilyn (Howie) Richey, BC, and sister-in-law Winnie Matheson, ON, and many other dear relatives.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Clarence Matheson and Murray (Louise) Matheson.
Cremation has taken place under the care of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A service will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
