It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved grandmother and great-grandmother, Shirley Christena (MacDonald) Burke of Grand Anse at the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home, on January 1, 2024 at the age of 88 years with her loving family by her side. Born February 28, 1935 in Poirierville, she was the daughter of the late Hughie Neil and Daisy MacDonald. She was the loving wife of the late Anthony (Tony) Donald Isaac Burke whom she loved and cared for at home for many years while he battled Parkinson’s disease until the very end.
Shirley worked for Canada Post for many years as a mail carrier until the age of 76 years, she loved her job and all the people and friends she made during those years.
Shirley was a sweetheart, with the kindest soul with a heart of gold. If you stopped in for a visit you would have been always well fed and made to feel at home. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and will be forever missed by her grandson Shane, and her great-grandchildren Tucker, Tanner, Sophie, and Kayla.
Shirley is survived by her grandson, Shane Doiron (Chrissie); her great-grandchildren, Tucker, Tanner, Sophie, and Kayla Doiron. Her sisters, Margret Doiron, and Roberta MacDonald.
Besides her parents and husband Tony, Shirley was predeceased by her daughter Darlene Lynn Doiron and her sister Mary Jean Fleet.
We want to extend our sincere gratitude to all the staff at the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home who took such loving care of her while she resided there and during the time of her passing. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much.
