On August 20th, Mary Isabel Johnston passed away at the age of 91. Born to John Martin Johnston and Agnes Johnston in Red Islands Nova Scotia in 1933, Isabel was the second child of four. She joins her older brother Greg and her brother-in-law Jack (Ouellette) who both passed away earlier this year, her younger brother Joseph and nephews Timothy and Steve. She is survived by her sister Peggy (Ouellette) and her nephews John (Linda) and Mike (Monique) and her nieces and nephews Donna, Cheryl, Gregory, Silvie and Mark.
Isabel graduated from school in Johnstown in 1951 and studied nursing at the New Waterford Hospital where she graduated as a RN in 1955. She moved to Dartmouth and started her nursing career at the Children’s Hospital and the Halifax Infirmary. In 1963, Isabel moved to Cambridge Massachusetts where she worked as a nurse in nursing homes and the Massachusetts General Hospital. In 1981, Isabel returned to her home in Red Islands to help care for her mother Agnes, and she became the director of the Richmond Villa, a senior’s long term care facility in St. Peter’s, for the next 25 years until her retirement in 2006. The families of residents of the Villa and her many employees speak fondly of Isabel’s focus on delivering the best care possible to the patients of the Villa. Isabel was excited to have moved into the Villa herself this year, as a resident in their independent living apartments where she made many deep connections in a short period of time.
Isabel was a strong, independent woman who loved taking care of her property in Red Islands. While Isabel never had her own children, she was very much involved in the lives of her two nephews in Nova Scotia for whom she was considered much more than an aunt. Isabel loved playing bridge and enjoyed social events, in particular Christmas, and was a very active participant in the many celebrations with the Ouellette family. As proof of her warmth, Isabel was very close to the MacNeil family across the road in Red Islands: Don, Susan and their children, Joanna and Joseph will greatly miss their “Nanna Bell”.
Isabel’s funeral, under the direction of Green’s Funeral Home will be held Tuesday, September 24th, 11 AM at Sacred Heart Church in Johnstown.
