Reynolds, Joan Marie (90) formally of Port Hastings, passed away peacefully Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at the Inverary Manor, Inverness, NS. Mom was the eldest of her family. She was born on February 3, 1934, daughter to the late Alex A Gillis and Ada P (Grant) Gillis of New Waterford, NS.
Mom grew up in the depression years and learned at an early age how to stretch a penny. She could make todays dollar into a $20. In her late teens Mom, like many at that time, contracted TB and spent 2 years in the Annex in Port Edward along with her sister Doreen and father Alex. The ability to live in trying times developed Mom’s character and resilience which enabled her to appreciate life and meet its many challenges. Once her health returned, she moved to Halifax for work. It is there that she met and married our father, Donald. They returned to Cape Breton with their young and growing family. While living in Port Hawkesbury Mom was an active volunteer with the Port Hawkesbury Legion Branch #43, Girl Guides of Canada, active member of St. Joseph Parish, Port Hawkesbury as well as of St. Mary of the Angels Parish in Glendale. She had many memorable times volunteering for Inverness County Parks and Recreation Department alongside her mentor and friend John Cotton.
Mom was widowed in her forties thus necessitating to rely upon her resilience once more. She returned to the classroom to upgrade her education then joined the work force to support her household. While working at Carlton Cards she met her second husband, William, who she married in 1988. Mom and Bill embraced their second chance at love and both families took great pleasure in seeing their parents enjoy life together. Mom was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother to her children and stepchildren. We will all miss her kind words, big hugs, great laugh and sense of humour. She not only loved her family but fiddle music, cards plays’, and bingo.
Mom was predeceased by her parents and siblings, Doreen Power and Raymond Gillis; as well as first husband Donald MacDonald, second husband William Reynolds, stepchildren Elwood Reynolds and Darlene Ernst; step-son-in-law Elias MacIsaac; step great granddaughter Sydney Reynolds, brothers-in-law Neil Trudeau, Joe Power; sister-in-law Mary Gillis as well as MacDonald in-laws Mac (Bessie), Eddie (Sadie), Francis X., Anna (Duncan Gillis), Dick Lussier and Joe Boudreau.
She is survived by her children Danial (Edna MacDonald) Kingsville, NS, Carol Ann (Raymond Boudreau) Lloydminster, AB, Donna (Michael McKeough) Fort McMurray, AB, Darlene (Bernard Deveaux), Stouffville ON. and stepdaughter, Sylvia (Donald Roddie MacDonald) Port Hood, NS. She is survived by her remaining siblings, sister Olive Trudeau (Bill), Belleville, ON, brothers, Vince Gillis, Chatham, ON and Stanley (Doreen) Greenwood, brother in-law Angus MacDonald (Grace) Port Hastings, sister-in-law Shirley Gillis, Ottawa, ON, Mary Boudreau and Kathleen Lussier of Waltham MA, 10 loving grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 7 step grandchild and 8 step great grandchildren.
We would like to thank those who cared for mom’s needs these past few years. From her good neighbors on Davis Drive, to MacLeod House, staff, and home care workers who helped enable Mom to live and enjoy an active and independent life in Baddeck. As well to the Inverary Manor and staff who tended to the increasing level of care she needed in her last year of life. They never failed to see, treat and appreciate Mom as an individual and loved her sense of humour. We have met and made many new and caring friends on Mom’s last leg of her journey. We are and will be forever grateful to all who cared for her.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation, Funeral Mass and Burial will take place on a later date. We will notify family and friends with the updated information as well as having it posted on Green’s Funeral Home website.
