GEORGE EDWARD HUNT 1947 – 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of George Edward Hunt, January 23, 2024. George, also known to many as “Pop”, was born on April 27, 1947 in Hr. Breton, Newfoundland.
He was predeceased by his parents Lucy (Skinner) and Walter Hunt; his loving wife of 40 years, Frances (Pierce) Hunt; his lovely daughter, Carolann Wilson; his brother, Sam Hunt; sister, Lillian Mullins; brothers in law, William Tapper, Joseph Grandy, Wilson Pierce, Walter Pierce, Frederick Price; sisters in law, Marjorie Brace, Olive Price and Ann Pierce. He is survived by his brother, sisters and in laws, Allan (Tammy) Hunt, NL; Margaret Tapper, BC; Evelyn (Roland) Mullins, NL; Anne Grandy, NL; Peggy (Mike) Hickey, NL; Harold Brace, NL; Yvonne Pierce, NS; Brenda Hunt, NL, Tom Mullins, NL.
He will also be greatly missed by his children, Corey (Dana) Hunt, D’Escousse; Cynthia (Curtis) Doucet, Port Hawkesbury; Craig (Gina) Hunt, Whites Lake, NS and son in law, Jim Wilson, St. Peter’s, NS. Of all the people who called him Pop, his grandchildren were his greatest gifts…Adam, Emma, Alexandra, Ethan, Morgan, Reagan and Jaxon. As well as his two great grandchildren, Hazel and Harper. He loved you all very much.
George left Newfoundland at the age of 15 to go fish on the draggers with his uncle in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. He celebrated his 16th birthday off the Grand Banks. As he got older, travelling between Lunenburg and Hr. Breton, George and Frances fell in love and were married. Although he was offered a position in Lunenburg, he opted to move to Petit De Grat to raise his family. He fished on the draggers for years before joining his brother-in-law, Wils Pierce on the “YOUNO” (name of the boat). His next adventure put him working at the Petit De Grat Fish Plant where many people who worked with him often remember that he would have to cut his cotton work gloves in order to fit them on his big hands. And of course, we can’t forget that he also worked in construction. Bulldozer, tractor, excavator etc. He was a part of the “new bridge” near the Corner Bridge Store. A few years later after moving to Port Hawkesbury, George lost his beloved Frances. His family took very good care of him. He went four-wheeling in the mountains, cruised the waters in Niagara Falls and was always up for a family meal. He had an impact on everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of The Richmond Villa in St. Peters for the amazing care they gave to George.
Visitation will be held at Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 724 Granville Street, Port Hawkesbury on Friday, January 26th, 2024, from 2 – 8 pm. Funeral service will be held Saturday, January 27th, 2024 in The Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Port Hawkesbury at 2 pm with Rev. Susan Slater officiating. Burial at a later date in Hr. Breton, Newfoundland. A reception will be held at the Port Hawkesbury Fire Hall following the service.
