It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our beloved brother, Cpl. Dennis Norman MacAulay of Grand River, Cape Breton on September 17, 2024. Dennis was born on December 3, 1956 to the late Gilbert “Buddy” and Dolena (MacLeod) MacAulay.
Surviving are sister, Katie (Blair) Boudreau and brothers, Donald (Audrey); Vernon (Danielle); and Jason (Tara); Godson, Jeff MacAulay; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dennis would often reminisce about his days in the armed forces, a proud Canadian Scotsman servicing his country. He had many of good times with his army buddies who appropriately nicknamed him “Caper”. He made lifelong friends while traveling around Europe, taking beautiful pictures and recording VHS tapes of his travels while stationed in Germany.
Dennis was loyal, kind, strong in his beliefs and had a quick wit and endless “one liners”. His “Happy Place” was Grand River where he returned after his retirement. His home overlooking the river was where he spent most of his time reading, watching old and new movies, enjoying rock and roll music, and just chill’in. Darts was another past-time where he enjoyed lots of laughs, a beverage and winning! House parties with some of his favourite people and driving his motorcycle.
We want to say a sincere thank you to all who reached out to Dennis and his family during the last months. He appreciated the fact that you respected his wishes (he was a private person) but knew how much you cared.
Special thanks to the Oncology Department at the Regional Hospital, Sydney; Dr. Lucas, R.N.’s, CCA’s and all their staff for their professional and compassionate care; Shona Conrad for taking all our calls and helping us through this journey; QEII for their role in helping Dennis and getting him home.
Last but not least, the Strait Richmond Hospital, Dr. Steven DeRoche, R.N.’s and all their staff for their excellent care, Dennis and family appreciated everything they did for him.
Cremation has taken place. No wake, no funeral as per his request.
