Obituary
Norman Frank Stevens, age 91, succumbed to illness on June 1st, 2024 after nearly five months in Valley Regional Hospital. Throughout his hospital stay, he and his family were comforted greatly by the phenomenal health care team tasked with his care. In the time preceding his death, he was surrounded by members of his family and passed peacefully in the night. Our family is grateful to know that he is at rest and comfortable. Born on August 25th, 1932 in Oxford, NS, Norman was raised in Pictou, but returned to Oxford around age 22. Back in his hometown, he married his wife, Elsie, on June 6th, 1956 and reared three wonderful children, Johnnie, Wayne, and Carole, in the coming years. Being a jack of all trades and a hard worker, Norman provided for his family by being a projectionist, woodworking, delivering milk, painting bridges, and finally, managing the local liquor commission. Throughout his working years and into his advanced ages, his true passions shone in his free time. He spent hours tending to his flourishing gardens, where he grew everything from beautiful flowers to all varieties of vegetables to giant pumpkins and squashes, which earned him an esteemed spot in the paper on multiple occasions. On any early weekend morning, you could find Norman scouring yard sales for treasures to keep for himself or to resell at his own sales. He found as much joy in the search for something new as he did in the ability to help someone else find their own bounty. Later in life, Norman and Elsie moved to Tideways Co-op Community in Wolfville, NS, where they’ve enjoyed the past 18 years establishing a new home and making loving friends along the way. These bonds have helped to support both parties leading up to, and beyond, the final days of his life. Anyone lucky enough to have known Norman would remember him fondly as a helping hand and a strong spirit. He was steadfast in his ability and desire to help those around him and worked tirelessly on projects, favors, and errands for those in need. Norman was the living image of obstinance and conducted himself with utmost respect for what is right and just in this world and that which comes after. His memory stands to remind those who survive him of the honor in performing acts of kindness and the beauty of keeping things simple. Norman touched the lives of many and has left a trove of cherished memories for his family, friends, and loved ones. Norman is predeceased by his mother, Milda; his siblings, Jack and Vonetta; and his son, Johnnie. He will be forever remembered and loved by those who have survived him, including his wife, Elsie; his children and their spouses, Wayne and Sandy, Carole and Todd, and Lerma (widow of Johnnie); his grandchildren, Shane, Josh, and Lane; and countless friends. Arrangements are in the care of MacDiarmid’s Funeral Homes & Crematorium. In accordance with Norman’s requests, no ceremony will be held. He wishes to be interned with his wife, so they may rest together in eternity. May his memory continue to bring comfort to those who mourn his passing. Our family takes comfort in knowing that he is reunited with his dearly departed in heaven. We thank you all for your condolences and support in this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, you may make donations to the Millvale Baptist Church or to a charity of your choosing.
