Dr. Hilda Tremblett Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Hilda Tremblett, age 96, on Friday October 18, 2024 at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born and raised in Bonavista, Newfoundland on June 11, 1928, Hilda was the daughter of the late Stewart and Selina (Brown) Tremblett. Along with her parents, Hilda was predeceased by a sister; Evelyn (Harry) Swyers, brothers; William Tremblett and Henry “Harry” (Marilyn) Tremblett. She is survived by a nephew; Edward Tremblett and nieces; Lynda (Karl) Gunderson and Karen Tremblett, also by great nieces Madeline and Isabella, and great nephew Odin.
At 17, she was the only recipient from Newfoundland, of a prestigious scholarship to attend McGill University in Montreal. Always a determined and dedicated individual, she completed her undergraduate degree and then graduated medical school cum laude in 1955. Hilda remembered her years at McGill with great fondness and was a proud alumnus. In 1964 she became the medical pathologist for Northside General Hospital, where she stayed until her retirement in 1991.
Her experiences in medicine provided the material for her recently published book, Courageous or Crazy. It provides a first-hand look at the compassion, commitment and sometimes unique experiences of a caring physician and humanitarian.
Hilda had many passions in life. She cared deeply for animals, raising numerous cats and dogs (Newfoundlanders of course!). Her love of travel and experiences throughout the world were beyond compare. She was as thrilled to go to the Arctic (not your typical cruise!) as she was taking the train across Canada to British Columbia. She enjoyed being on the ocean, berry picking, and cooking classes, as much as using the video camera (which she always had in hand) to document her travels, including trips to China and the Galapagos Islands. If you needed a partner for an adventure, Hilda was the one to call.
Perhaps her greatest fondness was that of giving to others. Grateful for the support she received as a young student, she believed in “paying it forward”. She established scholarships at Cape Breton University and her high school in Newfoundland. As a physician, she put the patient first, even walking to house calls in Newfoundland in her early years of practice, (because she didn’t have a car at the time!). As a lifelong proponent of healthy living and wellness, Hilda supported a wellness centre in Bonavista which now bears her name.
Her giving nature was most demonstrated by being a dedicated and dear friend, who counted friendships by the decade, and a cherished family member who gave love and support without end. Her energetic spirit and ready enthusiasm will be missed by all.
Her family would like to thank the many doctors, nurses, and staff at Cape Breton Regional Hospital and Northside General Hospital for the wonderful care provided.
A visitation for Dr. Hilda Tremblett will be held 2-4 and 7-9 pm Thursday October 24th in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral service will be held Friday October 25th, 2 pm at St. John United Church, Big Bras d’Or with Rev. Peter MacDonald officiating. Burial take place in Bonavista, Newfoundland at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Northside Harbourview Hospital Foundation. Online condolences may be left for the family on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com
