It is with great sadness the family of George Daniel Locke, 81, of Feltzen South, announce his passing on Monday, January 15, 2024 at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg.
Born in Main-a-Dieu, Cape Breton, he was a son of the late George and Jane (Boutlier) Locke. He was one of twelve children and has told many wonderful stories about his childhood.
One of George’s first jobs was working in the fish plant. From there he went to crew on fishing boats and quickly became Mate and then Skipper. He loved deep sea fishing but didn’t like how much time he spent away from his family, so he purchased a smaller boat to be able to do his own thing and be home more often. From there he ended up becoming a Lighthouse Keeper and this was his true calling. George lived on four different islands during his career; Flint Island, Country Island, White Head Island and Cross Island. It was his job on Cross Island that brought him back to Lunenburg and then to Feltzen South where his heart remained. After the Lighthouse Station closed, he worked on the Canadian Coast Guard Boats until it was time to retire. But retirement for him was just as busy as working full-time.
George was very involved in his community. He did volunteer work with Meals on Wheels, Riverport Lions Club, Citizens on Patrol, Knights of Columbus and many more. He was always willing to pitch in where needed. He loved helping his neighbours! He would drive people to appointments, help with house projects when storms hit, check on his friends in need, and generally could be counted on to just be there. The last and ongoing project he was involved with was with his granddaughter Kate. He gifted her some of his land and they built a beautiful peaceful space for people to come and stay and enjoy this paradise we call Feltzen South.
George was lucky enough to marry two beautiful women who loved him dearly. Ethel Rowlands Locke was his wife for 27 years and after her passing he found another lovely woman who adored him, Cheryl Boucher Locke and they were married for 23 years. He always said he was lucky to have found two women who could put up with him. He lived a very full, happy, silly life with both women.
George had three children, seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He loved his grands and greats so very much. One of the things he wanted, was to live long enough to see his great-great granddaughter be born and he was so thrilled to be able to see that happen.
One of his greatest loves in this life was his granddaughter Katie. She moved in with him and Cheryl when she was 17 and stayed in his life and heart until he took his last breath. Some of his last words were telling her that he loved her and that she was his sweet angel. She was his right hand, doing everything from mountains of paperwork to replacing cell phones that went for a swim in the dishwater. The love they shared was palpable. It radiated from both of them and everyone who was around them knew of the love they shared. He spoke often of her and that he didn’t know what he would do without her in his life. We should all be so lucky to have a Katie in our lives.
George is survived by his daughters, Denise and Sandra; son, Daniel (Suzanne); sister, Regina (Herbie) Snow; brothers, Tom, Pius (June), Charlie (Judy), Les (Ginny), Flynn, Angus (Linda); stepson, Mark Corkum (Pam); grandchildren, Amy, Katie, Craig, Sofie, Joziee, Danica, Alex; great-grandchildren; Samuel, Calvin, Evalynn, Ian, Oran, Rowland, Alaina, Gavin, Matilda, Elizabeth, Noah, Kylah, Brooklyn, Alexis, Jayce, Brady; great-great granddaughter, Everleigh Dawn; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, George is predeceased by his first wife, Ethel; second wife, Cheryl; sister, Josepha; brothers, Cecil, Douglas, Bill and sisters-in-law, Linda, and Lucy.
