Keith A. Roberts, of Bedford, passed away on June 30, 2024, in Halifax. He was born on August 6, 1935 in Kemptville, Yarmouth County, the fifth of eleven children to Florence (Allen) and Clarence Roberts.
He is survived by Elsie, his loving wife of 68 years, and his daughters Sherrey (Tim Ehler) and Susan Willar (Jeff), grandchildren Kristen (Ben), Jamie (Kylee), Josh (Hannah), and great-grandchildren Thomas and William. He also leaves behind his sisters Marilyn Crowell and Carol Randall, sisters-in-law Glenda, Slyvia, Mary, Mary, Sharon, brother-in-law Ronnie, and many nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Keith was predeceased by his siblings Maynard, Garth, Hilda, Clarence Junior, Arthur, Leroy, Bev, Kenny, and in-laws Betty, John, Pat, Eldon, Erving, Carol, several nephews and a niece.
Keith was in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1954 to 1964. He returned to civilian life and joined Moore Business Forms, Drummond Business Forms and SKIL Canada. He and Elsie moved to Bedford in 1958 and he was an active member of the Bedford community serving on the Bedford Service Commission, Bedford Baptist Church Finance Committee, EMO Ground Search and Rescue, Nova Scotia Police Commission and Halifax County – Bedford District School Board to name a few. He was a councillor from 1979 for the Town of Bedford, appointed Deputy Mayor in 1981, and elected as longest serving Mayor of Bedford from 1982 until 1988. He was most proud of spearheading the introduction of 911, Neighbourhood Watch and the adoption of running headlights in the province. Concurrently, he worked for the Nova Scotia Department of Attorney General as coordinator of Supreme and County Courts in 1982 and became High Sherriff of Halifax County in 1984 for 12 years.
Keith and Elsie enjoyed spending most of their free time at their cottage on the Bay of Fundy in Advocate Harbour. He had many hobbies including ham radio, archery, tai chi, boating, flounder fishing and hunting.
The funeral will be held at Bedford Baptist Church, 158 Rocky Lake Drive, Bedford on July 7th at 2:00 pm, reception to follow. There will be a visitation at 1:00 PM, preceding the service; private burial at a later date.
We are grateful for the excellent medical treatment Keith received throughout his life and the kindness and compassionate care on 5 West, Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building. A special thanks to nephew Brian Roberts for all his loving support.
