Anne Marie Moakler of Bedford NS passed away at Camp Hill Veteran’s Memorial Building in Halifax with family by her side, on June 29, 2024 at the age of 96 years 7 months.
Anne was born on November 29, 1927 in the Windsor Lake area, just outside St. John’s NL, to William and Alice (Dawe) Kearsey.
After completing her schooling, Anne joined her older sister Helen and worked for Avalon Telephone in the city for several years until meeting the love of her life, Alfred, at a local dance with some of her co-workers. It turned into an enduring relationship and after a proposal and engagement he returned to his work in Goose Bay. When he returned some months later they got married and they both returned to Goose Bay in 1949 to begin a life and family together. Their first son was born there and in 1954 he got a new position in Gander with the weather office. During the period between ’54 and ’63 they added four more sons to their family, before another advancement opportunity brought them back to Goose Bay. After returning to Goose Bay and when her youngest started school she returned to her previous career with Bell Telephone with a schedule that allowed her to see that her children got off to school okay and was there to make sure they all had a good supper, speaking to her devotion of family first. With Bell she moved up to Assistant Chief Operator and eventually Chief Operator with Newfoundland Telephone. Life brought another big turn in her life in 1974 when Alfred died of Cancer and was buried in Happy Valley, one year before his planned retirement. With five sons the youngest being 11 years old she took charge and moved on, supporting the family and being the pillar she was. Four years later a management opportunity with Newfoundland Telephone in St. John’s saw her moving there with three of her children and shortly after bought her first house. She retired in 1990 and was recognized for her 25 years of service. In 1997 she got in her car and drove to Nova Scotia and settled in Bedford to be closer to her granddaughter and get to know her better.
Over the years Anne was devoted to her church and faith, helping out in all sorts of ways such as reader of liturgy, Eucharistic Minister and bringing Eucharist to the sick and elderly, mentoring to new adults to the faith as a volunteer with RCIA. Through her parish she also knit countless socks and hats and mitts for those who needed them most and lap blankets for those in shelters and so much more. Also the IWK received caps for newborns and finger puppets for the not quite so young. As a member of the Telephone Pioneers she also enjoyed engaging with other members in various guilds, meeting to do quilting work together and enjoying each other and other activities that were a benefit to parts of the community at large.
Many hours were spent on what she seemed to like the most with needle work such as cross stitch and black work. She had an eye for detail and figuring things out such as a piece she did of the Halifax skyline from the Dartmouth side which was a picture she saw and then took graph paper to transfer it to a lovely black work. Also she did one of the Old Town Clock in Halifax, both of which she gave to two of her sons. One other she did of the Garrett homes, a landmark in St. John’s which she kept for herself. A strong willed and caring person to all others before self, she left hope and direction to those she left behind and will be missed by many including people outside of her family ties, especially her group from River Lane.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband Alfred (1974), sons Paul (2012) and David (2020), her sisters Mary Codner, Agnes (Ag) Ansara (late Joe) and brothers John (infant) Jack and Tom.
She is survived by her children Ron (Linda Comeau) Beaver Bank NS, Ken (Lan Le) Ottawa and Philip (Joanne Lethbridge) Clarenville NL, her daughter-in-law Linda Rowe Moakler (late Paul), and her granddaughter Denise Moakler (Dylan Behan) Sydney NSW Australia. Also surviving are siblings Helen Cull (late Joe), Frank (late Mary), Pat (late Nora), Patricia, Mercedes (Doug) Patton and Bill (Dianne), her in-laws Bill Codner, Sylvia (Jack) Kearsey, and Anne (Tom) Kearsey, her step-grandchildren Tracey, Cynthia, Bruce, Van, and Thuy and step great grandchildren Emily, Katie, Sasha, Ellie, Kirin, Quinn, Luna.
Anne requests that in lieu of flowers you might consider a charitable donation. Two of her favorite charities are Canadian Cancer Society and Heart and Stroke Foundation.
The family would like to recognize all the staff and volunteers of the Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building for the excellent care afforded to Anne from the beginning of her stay there since June of 2023 to the end. You all were there to comfort her when she needed it and that was also felt by us as a family as well.
Local mass and services will be held at St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish of Bedford and a subsequent Memorial Mass in St. John’s NL at future dates. See updates here as dates become established
