Dorothy Anne Snyder 1948-2024
“Anne with an e”,
as she loved to introduce herself, was born Dorothy Anne Turner in Halifax, daughter of Frances, a watercolour artist, and Malcolm, a Canadian Forces officer whose military postings took the family across Canada and abroad. Anne grew up in NS, NB, BC, ON, the UK, and Germany. Her public school education was bookended in England, having completed both primary and graduation years in Surrey.
On returning to Canada, she enrolled in Miss Murphy’s Business College, earned a diploma, and secured a secretarial position in Halifax, while taking on the occasional role with Theatre Arts Guild-Pond Playhouse. In 1973, she married Penticton High School English teacher and British Columbia Dragoons Army Reserve officer, David Snyder. They settled in Penticton, BC. where Anne held the position of office administrator with the Penticton First Nations Band Council. With a history of school plays behind her, Anne enrolled in theatre studies at the University of Victoria while her husband completed his Masters degree there.
Back in Penticton, Anne became active in community theatre and journalism for nearly three decades. Her regular InSnyder newspaper column – a popular mix of local and personal storytelling often baring “private family” escapades, – met with resounding success, as did her weekly Arts report. She performed in countless Penticton Theatre Club productions in addition to fulfilling her role as Penticton and District Community Arts Council Coordinator. Anne consistently fed her passion for theatre, song, and dance by performing various roles, from “treading the Boards” to directing productions, and facilitating media liaison. This passion, unsurprisingly, carried over into her life in general. She was the consummate actor, entertainer, and storyteller, driven by a spirited, indomitable force. Everyone in her personal universe had an “Annecdote”.
Always impeccably turned out, Anne kept the cosmetic, hair, nails, and women’s fashion industries afloat.
She and her husband David raised two sons, Adam and Jonathan. Adam completed an MBA degree in Taiwan, where he met his Taiwanese wife, and began a teaching career in Tainan. Anne thoroughly enjoyed visiting her three trilingual grandsons there.
Jonathan chose a career in the Canadian Armed Forces, rising to the rank of Captain, serving in both Afghanistan and Abu Dhabi, but tragically died at age 26 during a second tour in Afghanistan in 2008. He was awarded the Star of MilitaryValour, and Anne was named a National Silver Cross mother; those so honoured represent all mothers and families who have lost a child in the line of service. One part of dealing with her grief led Anne to work with the Hope Program, in which trained volunteers lend peer counselling support to families in her situation. Anne was an articulate communicator and was recognized at the national level for several years of successful volunteer work with Hope/Espoir.
Anne loved to travel. Destinations included Thailand, Taiwan, Turkey, the Middle East, the Bahamas, and Saint Martin, Netherlands Antilles, where she owned a holiday timeshare for several years.
She moved back from BC in 2003, residing first in Chester, then Halifax and Head of Jeddore with her new partner James Pike, before moving to Bridgewater in 2019. She resided in Drumlin Hills Seniors Residence, subsequently moving to Ridgewood Assisted Living, and most recently, Shoreham Village in Chester.
Anne was brought up in the Christian Science Church and continued to be an active member throughout her life. She was also a member of the Royal Commonwealth Society in Halifax and a member of the Chester Legion. The Legion flag was flown at half mast in remembrance.
Our inimitable sister passed away peacefully and painlessly on November 2. She will continue to be a spirited presence in our lives.
Anne is survived by her son Adam Snyder, Tainan City, Taiwan & Penticton BC (Daphne Ding Snyder), grandsons Jonathan, Alden, and Earnest; five siblings: Peggy, Mahone Bay (Lloyd MacDonald), Jennie, East Chester (Peter McGuire), Penny, Chester (Terry Bremner), Guy, Sheffield, UK (Jane Terris Turner), and Tom, Chester Basin (Teena Hebert Turner); and nephews, nieces, and great nieces.
Our family is grateful for the attentive, compassionate palliative care demonstrated by the South Shore Regional Hospital medical team, including that of the capable, caring paramedics who brought her to Emergency and kept her comfortable until she could be seen.
