Mum slipped away quietly at South Shore Regional Hospital on April 23, 2024.
Elsie was born in Toronto,Ontario to Frederick William Barrett and Bessie Caroline (Bunker)
Mum met the love of her life, Alan Cullum, who had just moved to Ontario from England. They
were married on July 8, 1961. Mum and Dad were approaching 63 years of partnership,
commitment and love.
Mum went to Teachers College after graduating from Leaside High School in Toronto. She
worked as a Grade 1 teacher for a few years, before having children of her own.
Mum stayed at home with her 3 children: David, Judy and Joan.
She always had her sewing machine at the ready. As children, she made Judy and Joan
matching outfits (which we are still traumatized by!). We are sure David benefitted from some
handmade clothes too!
Throughout Mum’s lifetime, she was a talented seamstress, dressmaker and handy with
alterations. Mum made the majority of her own clothes over the years, along with many prom
dresses, wedding dresses, bridesmaid’s dresses and clothes for whoever asked or hired her.
She could alter ANYTHING, it seemed.
Mum loved music and joyfully played the piano whenever time allowed. She also danced and
was an avid square dancer for over 50 years with her lifelong partner, Alan, by her side.
Mum is survived by:
Husband Alan, son David (Sue Brayshaw-Huedema), daughters Judy (Richard Greene) and
Joan (Rob McInnes).
Grandchildren Katelyn (Richie Steer), Courtney (Bryan Gendron), Eric (Ashley Briggs), Mitchell,
Caroline, Ben, Will and Caledonia (Andrew Campbell).
Great Grandchildren Archie, Mick and Jaxon.
Brother Alfred Barrett (Joan), nephews Nick and Neil (Veronica)
Brother-in-law Barry Purnell, nephews David (Rosa) and Mike (Jen)
Plus many, many, many special friends in Ontario and Nova Scotia.
Mum was cremated, in the care of Dartmouth Funeral Home Ltd.
A celebration of life in Mum’s honor will take place at Trinity United Church in Mahone Bay,
Nova Scotia on May 25th, 2024 at 11am, with reception to follow in the church hall. All are
welcome to attend.
We would like to thank Dr. Ryan Finnamore, all of her specialists and the EXCELLENT health
care workers over the months at the QE2, Valley Regional and her final resting place of South
Shore Regional Hospital.
We would also like to thank Reverend Heather Ferrier for her spiritual support.
(We are also grateful to the MANY family and friends who offered kind words, meals, flowers
and support during a very crazy time!)
