A Good Man of Many Lives. Daniel Anthony ‘Tony’ Gibson was in many ways an adventurer and explorer and in all ways a kind, thoughtful, and generous person.
Tony was an only child born in Manchester England in 1932. He lost his parents early growing up very independent, curious, a bit of a daredevil, and an avid racing enthusiast. Moving from Britain with a young family and his first wife Marjory (nee Bennison) to Canada was a big step on its own in 1959. Yet it was not his first Trans Atlantic crossing. Having worked for a brief time in the Merchant Marine with Manchester Liners he had already made a few passages to North America. He initially settled in Winnipeg starting his career as a Medical Photographer at the Children’s Hospital. Five years later he took up a new post half-way across the country with a move to Halifax where he assumed the position of Director of Audio-Visual at Dalhousie School of Medicine. Tony, Marjory and their sons Michael and Martin lived happily in beautiful St. Margaret’s Bay where they embraced the easy natural lifestyle, and which would remain Tony’s homebase until the end of his years.
Following the untimely passing of his dear wife Marjory in 1983, Tony met Monique Gusset who he married in 1986 starting the next chapter of his adventure. Living in Duncan’s Cove with Monique Tony’s family was expanded with the addition of her daughters Dominique et Pascale, a new circle of friends and a way of life which was musical and artistic.
Taking early retirement from his work with the Dalhousie Medical School, Tony began another career volunteering with CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency) moving with Monique to Trinidad. Over the next 5-6 Tony’s patient guidance helped develop teaching techniques and technical support for the Medical School in St. Augustine while he and Monique immersed themselves in the rich culture and people of the West Indies. In 1994 Monique and Tony moved back to Nova Scotia to retire splitting their time between their homes, families, and friends in St. Margaret’s Bay and Duncans Cove.
Tony was to lose another wonderful partner too soon when Monique passed away in 2002. He continued to live life simply and fully enjoying travelling, the outdoors, and spending time with his family, special friend Francine Cosman, and others.
When Covid arrived, he became a much-loved member of his son Martin’s and daughter-in-law Tracy’s household with his grandchildren Nicholas, Haley, and partners. In the last few months, he lived nearby in Sheldrake Lodge a small caring community residence.
Tony lived a full, rich, passionate life with dignity and good humour. A true polymath, he applied himself totally and with great vigour to subjects as disparate as Formula One racing, his Minuet sailboat, restoring vintage British motor cars, exploring new applications for Ultraviolet Photography, tuning period Harpsichords, learning to play the steel drum, and setting up University level AV departments.
Tony was a life-long learner who loved to challenge himself, but the man we will best remember was always gracious considerate and did everything with good humour. He loved a good joke, a good card game, a good book and a good conversation and never failed to find the positive in any situation. There was nothing a cup of tea and a biscuit couldn’t make better unless it was a glass of French burgundy.
He will be dearly missed by his family Michael Gibson, Martin Gibson and Tracy Schrans, Dominque Gusset and Michael Koszyca, Pascale Gusset and Robert Davis and grandchildren Max, Nick, Alex, Louis, Haley, and Roman.
Thank you to the team at Sheldrake Lodge for their loving care and the extraordinary compassionate support of the staff at QE2 emergency in the last hours of his life.
A celebration of a life well-lived will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers please extend an act of kindness to another as Tony did his entire life.
