Obituary of Gregor Fraser
James Gregor Fraser, BCom.,CPA., FCA
Gregor passed away at the age of 90 having lived a full life of love, challenge and fulfilling experience.
Gregor was the second son of Mary L. and J.Arch Fraser, born in Amherst, NS 1933. He grew up in Truro where he met the love of his life.
He leaves behind his wife Linda (Crowe), son Malcolm (Jennifer) and daughter Mary Elizabeth Rafuse (Jim) along with his grandchildren, Zachary and Jeremy Fraser and Sydney and Holly Rafuse. He is survived by his elder brother Roderick, his wife Gail, and nieces Rena Jo (Bunch) and Suzie Fraser and niece and nephews Peter, Jon, and Nancy Morrison. Gregor was predeceased by his parents, his beloved Aunt, Charlotte Christie, and his sister-in-law Donna.
Gregor was a consummate professional who loved the challenges of his work and sought to give his complete service to his clients.
Following his graduation from Mount Allison University, he worked for the Canadian Tax Department for two years but soon sought out his Accountant Designation joining H.R. Doane and Company in 1958. The balance of his career was spent with this company where he was an important driver of its growth and reputation. Gregor built a career as a strategic advisor to a significant and impactful client base. His technical acumen, relentless focus on perfection and his calm demeanor is what led to his reputation as a strategic asset to the largest regional and national businesses. As the firm grew regionally and nationally, he served as National Chairman and Managing Partner in New Glasgow and Halifax.
Gregor was generous with his time and talent to many community organizations including the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation, Cathedral Church of All Saints in Halifax, the Last Post fund, TUNS Board of directors, Halifax Port Authority, Sobey Art Foundation, Donald Sobey Foundation, David and Faye Sobey Foundation, Treasurer of the Liberal Party of Nova Scotia, Federal fund raiser for the Liberal Party of Canada, Shoreham Village Foundation, St. Stephen Church Endowment Committee and the Chester Brass Band.
Music was a passion for Gregor and for over 80 years he was a Chorister in many Choirs in both Baptist and Anglican churches. Gregor was also a practiced musician. He was a multi-instrumentalist and a third-generation conductor of the Truro Concert Band. For over 58 years he played in the Chester Brass Band. Music was a critical part of his life.
Gregor was a trusted friend, a loving husband, father, and grandfather whose quiet love gave great comfort. He never stopped caring about his community and engaged everyone he knew with fun, kindness, and generosity.
There will be a celebration of life at St. Stephen’s Church, 60 Regent St, Chester Nova Scotia at 2pm on Friday March 15. A reception will follow at Chester Yacht Club, 21 South Street Chester, Nova Scotia.
We would like to thank the generosity and kindness of Dr. Anne Chiasson, the nursing staff at South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater, and his dedicated care giver Holly Rafuse. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York Street, Bridgewater. In his remembrance, donations may be made to the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore.
