Obituary
Nickerson, Morton Allen – 75 of The Hawk, passed away on October 12, 2024 at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Morton was the second son of the late Mitchell and June (Cunningham) Nickerson and for the most part he lived on or near the Hawk for most of his life. His first love was his boys, but had many passionate desires as a true Hawker beyond that. From the time he was old enough to tote a shot gun or rifle his fall and winters were taken up with hunting, Sea Ducks on the Horse Race, the famous West Point Buck, rabbit hunting, and anything else that was game, day or night. He was famous for his “barn style” duck stews where he would feed all the men that a barn could hold and good times were had by all. He loved to take people fishing who had never had the experience before or hadn’t done it in a long time, and was very competent in a small boat in rough water.
Mort was one of the last great story tellers who could entertain an audience in a small community hall, and keep their interest going for an evening. He could spin a yarn and act it out as events unfolded the day it happened. Sketching with pencil and paper was his natural talent and hobby and sometimes adding color with ordinary crayons to enhanced his sketches. In the Roseway Hospital less than two weeks ago he was sketching a sailboat to give to one of the nurses.
Morton loved his brothers, Brayton, Edward, Elroy who were also friends, hunting partners, and partners in crime if need be. They were also those he could call on for any reason or as company. His sister Marlene was his family care giver, his advisor, and his helper, his loved and only sister who was there to answer any call at any time, to take care of that pressing need.
Mort is survived by his children, Graham (Jessica), Carter (Krista) and Jamie; grandchildren, Andrew, Jakob and Emily; brothers, Brayton (Sylvia), Edward (Patsy) and Elroy (Darlene); sister, Marlene (Walter); several nieces and nephews.
Morton was predeceased by his parents, Mitchell and June; aunts on his mother’s side of the family, Edna, Ruby and Melba; uncles, Robert, Milton, Gerald, Calvin (Kelly), Gardner and Russell. Predeceased on his father’s side by aunts, Adrai, Clissie, Winnifred and Margaret; uncles, Abner, Edward, Ashton, Thomas, Ethan, Bernard, Gerald and Archie.
Visiation will be held on Wednesday, October 16, from 6-8 pm at the H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Barrington. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 17, at 2:00 pm from the H.M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, Barrington. Memorial donations may be made to Roseway Hospital or any charity of choice.
