Obituary
Hennigar, Joanna Dale (nee Buchanan) – 70, passed away suddenly on July 14th, 2024, at home, with her loving husband by her side.
Joanne was the first of eight children born on February 17, 1954, in Shelburne, NS, to William Buchanan and Deborah Christie Williams. As a teenager, she became a part of a blended family of 16 children when her father married his second wife, Pauline.
Joanne moved to the Annapolis Valley as a young woman, and it was here that she met her husband. After several years, they returned to reside in Shelburne, where she was employed by Graham Huskilson’s Garage Ltd for 30 plus years until her retirement in 2019.
Joanne was a very kind and thoughtful soul and loved a good laugh with friends and family. Although she was very well known by many, and happily acknowledged everyone she knew, she was genuinely of a very quiet and private nature. She had an undying love for animals and owned many unique pets during her lifetime. She was one of the first people in Shelburne County to own miniature horses, and she was truly proud of them, always entering them in the Shelburne County Agricultural Exhibition, of which she was a long-time director. She dedicated herself to the George Matthews Memorial Kiddy Barn, making sure that the animals housed in it received the very best of care, and she was constantly looking for new ways with which to entertain the children and adults alike who entered its doors. She was an avid reader, and many borrowed her numerous books. Joanne loved to shop. It was said if she had a hundred dollars to spend, she was going to the mall. If she had two hundred, she was headed to Yarmouth.
Joanne is survived by Ralph, her loving husband of 47 years; Her son Jade (Marlene) of Shelburne; Stepdaughter, Rosalind, PEI ; Brothers, David (Rose) Buchanan, of Shelburne, Vincent (Amy) Buchanan, of Shelburne, Peter (Elizabeth) Buchanan, of Jordan Bay, Kenneth (Jeri Lynn) Buchanan, of Sandy Point, Joe (Janet) Christie, of Shelburne, Frank (Elizabeth) Christie, of Sandy Point, Michael(Terrie) Buchanan, of Jordan Branch, and Doug (Virginia) Christie of NB ; Sisters, Diane (David) Perry, of Shelburne, Heather Swaine, Port Clyde, Sherry Lynn (Paul) Spinney, of Sunken Lake, NS, Lisa, Shelburne, Sheryl Thibideau, Grande Prairie, Alta, Debra (Gary)Newell, of Barrington, Shelly (Raymond) Perry, of Shelburne, and Billie Lynn (Shawn) Foote, Jordan Bay; Several grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews; Also her beloved dogs, Zoe, Sammy, and Suzie, and her two rescue cats.
